Thread: Steering Rack Boot Replacement Tech Day

  1. #1

Default Steering Rack Boot Replacement Tech Day

A few of you mentioned you also had torn steering rack boots.

I'd like to host a tech day specifically for replacement of torn steering rack boots. We can look at a group buy on the boots as well.

I'd like to gauge interest in this so please respond if you'd like to participate and/or have need of new boots.

Location will be near 380/75 in McKinney.
Date is Saturday, April 21st, 2007.

I need to replace the steering rack boots on my Miata. Count me in.

Both mine are split, so I am in. Maybe at the same time someone can figure out the front end noise I've got every time I run over a rough patch of road. Sounds like a coffee can full of lug bolts. I've checked the front end and everything seems tight, maybe someone else has had this before.

Are you using the oem brake pad clips? I had that same noise on an OTM and it was the brake pads ratteling in the calipers.

That's the first thing I thought of too. I can see springs through the top of the caliper where you view the pads but I don't know if they are OEM or not. They appear to overlap each other and I didn't think that looked right?

Does the OEM setup have those shims?

Count me in. I will go ahead and order some boots. I have a manual rack, and I don't know if they interchangeable from year to year or options. Mine are due. Also, need to get tie rod end links while I'm down there.

I called Autozone in McKinney. Phil, the manager said he has a $20 kit that includes both boots. He will knock off 10% if we do a group buy.

This might be a generic kit. Do you think this will work ok?

If anyone can find a better deal, let me know.

Group Buy! Have Trussville ship a box of them to the site of the tech day.

I don't know about the generic kits. The older ones from Napa were split w/ clamps. They suck. But Autozone usually has OEM type parts. Might be worth looking into. I'll go check.

They didn't try real hard. I called O'Reilly in Colleyville and they said they have them in stock in their warehouse. Can be here next day by 9 AM. $15.99 for a pair. Same part number for 95's as for 93, so most likely one size fits all.

From Trussville:Mazda Miata Outer Tie Rod Dust Boot (1)B455-32-279$7.31

Is this the boot we're talking about? If so, that's pretty cheap and I believe they've got free shipping on $100 plus orders. Just need 7 Miatas.

I'm changing out both. I'm in for either set.

Yep, would be wise to change both. That's what I was planning. My tie rod dust boots are in terrible shape.
