Forgot to torque the lug nuts?

My memory isn't so good, but I remember somewhere I autocrossed, one of the tech guys had a torque wrench and check the torque on each and every lug nut on my car.

My dad installed the wrong size, too small, lug bolts in the one rear hub of my brothers Dodge. When I had borrowed the car, all the lug bolts pulled through the hub at about 70 mph, and I lost a wheel.

i think someone set him up, i don't see any one under torquing 5 lugs on 4 wheels. even more so to the point where you get all 4 wheels to come off at the same time.

How about over torqueing? I could see that causing the problem if the bolts were already stretched to their breaking point.

I could see putting all the nuts on because the torque wrench was still in the tool box and then getting distracted by a bunch of . Those didn't look even finger tight. I've failed to torque all the nuts on one wheel and driven 100 miles without catastrophic failure.

The word from another forum is that a shop sold him the wrong lug nuts, and he did torque them to 75-80 lb/ft.

I agree with Onething. He was going to do it, when the car was back on the ground and just didn't Git er' Dun.

Listen real carefully at the video between 1:04-1:10 and they are talking to the driver saying,"You had the wrong size. It won't work. Do you have another set."

Can somebody 'splain to me how you can torque the wrong size nuts to 75-80 ft/lbs? Seems they would strip or be tight. That video looked like the nuts were laying in paddock.

I hope the poor guy can get somebody else to pay for the damage, but I suspect he wont have much luck. If they were the wrong lug nuts, I suspect the shop will do their best to avoid liability. It's worth a try to try and turn it in to insurance... I would love to hear the conversation with the insurance adjuster.
