Thread: Transmission slip?

  1. #1

    Question Transmission slip?

So I've taken the car out for a couple of small test trips around the 'hood, and I'm finding that the car isn't accelerating like it used to. It does this funky, sort of automatic-tranny type of slipping while in gear. So far only 1st and 2nd (I haven't ventured into the higher gears yet...)

Any ideas as to why the car may be doing this? Otherwise, it everything else seems to be ok.

I don't know how much was taken apart and reassembled, but guesses are:

    - Oil on clutch either in assembly or from a leaky seal (CAS or crank seal maybe?)

    - Clutch pedal needs to be adjusted

    - Pressure plate is worn down.

Hmm, when you're accelerating in 2nd does it feel like the the clutch slips slightly for a couple of seconds, then catches and you accelerate normally? If so that's exactly whats been happening with mine since I bought it.

Go drive it up a hill and short shift from 2nd to 5th. If RPMs jump and the car doesn't it's slipping. Mine felt like that during autocross launches and a new slave cylinder fixed that problem. Check that out.

That sounds most like what's going on now...

...the slave cylinder is an easy fix???

We'll have to try to re-do the clutch master/slave bleed.

I have my vacuum pump located again.

Sweet... perhaps later this week? I'll look into a cheap replacement cylinder.

I needed one a few weeks ago. It's gone up to $7. Sorry Bean, you might have to save up for this one.

Take it off the car and inspect the bore. If it's pitted/rusty/nasty replace the whole thing. If it still looks good get the rebuild kit.

Well, ventured out a little bit further and I'm starting to think that those who voted clutch are right. It's not having a problem getting into gear, its having a problem accelerating after being put in gear. It goes but wants to rev before it feels like it catches.

Get a new rear main seal too. That was actually what my problem was when I thought it was clutch.

Yup... I saw the kit go for about $45. It had four different seals with it.

Given the choice, I prefer dealing with FM. I've always had good service with them.
