Thread: Another hole in the ozone

Default Another hole in the ozone

So I've got a project on the side, 20 yr old Honda that needs a recharge of R12. I find a guy on craigslist who has 8 cans for sale, but he's in Denton. So he volunteers his friend who just moved from Colorado to Euless to bring it to me. I only wanted a couple but since he went to the trouble, I told him I'd go ahead and take 4 (after all, freon r12 is like cash, beer and toilet paper...you can never have too much.)

His buddy called me and we agreed to meet at the local WalMart. He tells me to look for a TransAm & I tell him to look for a Miata.

He drives up and parks next to me and says,
"you sure are causing me some grief"

Opens up the trunk and there are the remains of 8 exploded cans of freon, shrapnel all over the place. Seems he left it there last night and all day long today.

I'm gonna guess that trunk was really cold for a short time. About $160 worth.

You know a 50/50 mixture of propane and butane works quite nicely.

Just make sure to put about 40% of the amount you would need for R12.
They used to market it under a name of OZ-12a. Oh, and make sure you have enough oil in the compressor.

I've used those $35 R134a conversion kits before with good results in both cases. I'd do it again without hesitation.

+1 I think I may have done a write up on it.
