    Default New Daddy questions

Guys...I know this will sound incredibly stupid, but I've never claimed to be smart....Anyway, at the end of the year, I will, God willing, become a father for the first time. I know one thing- I will not be getting rid of my 01 black Miata. What I don't know is how, if at all, I will be able to cart the little girl around when I don't switch for my wife's FX35...Does anyone take their baby in their Miata? Or is it just not done? Thanks! Looking forward to many funny anecdotes!

I do now, but my wife demanded that I get a rollbar first (WooHoo!), and that I wait until she is 3. For the first 3 years, we survived with having only 1 car that she could ride it.

I ran my daughter around in a '74 Corvette when she was a baby.

Plus she has ridden in every car we have ever owned since she has been with us including 3 different Miatas and a '67 Cadillac with only lap belts. She turned 12 this month.

Settle down you'll do fine dad.

I rode around in the back of a VW when I was a baby.

Rode around in the trunk of a Datsun 1200 most of my early years.

Yep. The only times Katie rode in the Miata have been to pull it into the garage from the driveway. Wait till you get that precious human in your arms and you will realize no harm must come to him/her.

The Miata will seem to risky. I even disconnected my passenger airbag but Katie will not get a ride on public streets for some time. We juggle the family car depending on who needs to take the kid some where. It's a minor PITA but we manage.

As a child I rode in my mom's lap and held my dad's drink so he could light his cigarette and swap out 8-tracks...

    I'm still here!

Besides, nothing teaches a child balance and dexterity faster than standing up in the seat while not spilling a beverage on the shag carpet of a spankin' new Caddy!

I dunno about you guys, but I just turned 33, and I never had a clue as to what a car seat was until about 1987. It's a wonder I lived to get grown, I guess...

I am not making this us. I was The Cupholder before cars had 'em. You will be fine riding your kiddo around in the Miata (car seat might be a good idea), and he/she will grow up with happy roadster memories... the best family car we ever had, IMHO, was our '76 Eldorado convertible...

My kiddo was 3 yrs old when I bought my Miata. He's ridden in it from the beginning.

As for younger, I wouldn't have an issue with it in my car. Of course, you want to check the seat belts really well. The NBs have explosive seatbelt reels but I don't recall if they tighten or loosen in an accident. You'll want to check that. You do NOT want them loosening.

The other thing to worry about is eye damage and sunburn from having the top down. Little ones are very susceptible to that.

    Ummm, why would they loosen?

Like I said... I didn't know if they tightened or loosened... Re-read it and get your panties out of a wad.

On the NA's driver's side they have a section of stitched webbing that is designed to rip out (the stitches) in an accident and LENGTHEN the seatbelt which actually LOOSENS it around your hips.

Back on topic. Soren has riden in my car since about 9 months old. I waited until he was a full year to take him with the top down. I never worried about him in the car as an infant. He rarely rode in my car before a year old but after than it was whenever we got the opportunity. No more than 10 miles at time with the top down, but he loves it even more now. Just watch it if he/she has a bottle. He threw one out a stop light one time.

I have 5 children and have had my Miata for almost 18 years. I would not encourage a baby in the front seat of any car. I might add that that was the nice part of owning a Miata. No Honey , they can't ride with me because it would be unsafe. But then they grow up and beat you at AutoX

Strictly speaking, car seats and roadsters don't mix. Kids belong in the back seat for safety.

If you have to take the child along, turn off the passenger airbag. Don't just plan on being careful. None of us plan on getting in a wreck.

    Oh, and Congratulations!

Wow, guess I should have CPS called on me then. I don't have a passenger side airbag, and I still stand by my last post. I'm sure I was super safe in mom's 77' CVCC without even wearing a seatbelt.....times change, child seats are pretty safe, but we all take a risk everytime we get in a moving vehicle. Be careful out there.
