Thread: Elec-terical question

  1. #1

    Default Elec-terical question

I've got a couple of things I want to wire up, and I'm wondering where's the best place to source the power.

    1) I want to rewire the cig lighter so that it's hot all the time (in case I want to leave my phone in there to charge, eg). The "switched" lighter has always bugged me about older Japanese cars...

    2) My hard top has a dome light, and I picked up the connectors from Altex to wire it up, but now I need a power source. There's a plug on the car behind the driver seat near the rear brace, but I think it's the defroster plug since it's not hot with the key off. Would it be reasonable to wire this light into the interior light circuit? Keep in mind this circuit has a 10A fuse, I've already added 2 footwell lights, and it also (I think) supplies power for the radio memory - and I don't want to burn my car to the ground.

Seems like I coulda figured this out back when I was younger and could diagram a basic circuit, but this sort of thing ex-scapes me these days...

    Thx...

    1. It's really easy to pull a line straight from the battery (don't forget fuses) to add a cigarette lighter socket behind the passenger seat...

    2. If in doubt about amp draw, use an LED bulb in the dome light.
Maybe 4 wheels aren't so bad after all... wickett.org

    1. True about the cig lighter, but I figure I'd just make the stock one hot all the time - so maybe I'll pull a hot wire (w/fuse) to it.

    2. I thought about jerry-rigging an LED and a couple of 9V batteries to the dome light, but that started to get really ghetto - no offense...

EDIT: Ah, now I see what you're saying! Excellent idea! Duh...

My main thing is that I want this stuff to work as if it were stock. I see now that there are a couple of fuses in the trunk (one for the pwr antenna and another for the defroster). If those are hot in my car, they'd probably be good power sources, right?

    (214) 426-4282. Tom wired my '03 cig socket to be always hot. I also had a terminal block wired in that is also always hot. Don't recall what it cost, but it wasn't much.

I intend to do the same in the '07, just haven't gotten around to it.

Oddly, Hiley is hitting up LSMC to be the "Dealership" of the club!

And don't forget to ask about our parts price-matching policy! If their part costs more than ours, we'll match it!
