Thread: Crank Nose fix?

    Default Crank Nose fix?

I feel stupid bringing this up, but as tricky as some are on here and after 20 years, I figured...what the heck. Has anyone come up with a successful solution (welding or whatever) to fix a broken keyway on the short nose?

After the problem being out there for 20 years I thought ........maybe someone...uuh..probably not.... but ask anyway. I've been on the big board and saw a couple of threads talking about it, but no long term reply
like "Oh I fixed it with super glue and I have 60k on it with no problems."

I know the main fix is go buy a good used engine. Well I went down this path...sort of... did a swap + $$ deal.... and after looking at the motor (I regret not getting a "good one") I think pulling the crank out and putting it in the exisiting motor would be a better avenue. But welding a fix on the one in the car would be a lot easier. My McGuyver friend can weld and fab with the best... but if it is a bad fix why get him to try.

If I have to do a bunch of "crank trading and motor pulling" I may be looking for some "one or ones" who would like some FREE sessions on track at MSR for helping get the thing running right.

It runs fine, but the crank pulley wobbels and MER told the last owner it had a bad keyway.
It is one of the red NAs that Jeff Harrison used for schools out at MSR. The Motor Trend cars.

I will get Todd from TOPP to call him. Todd can weld just about anything.

Are you 100% sure it is not just a bad harmonic balancer those wobble like heck when they go bad.

Stevan is a great source for a second opinion.

I talked to him and he said the same as everybody, get another motor.

How funny is this, I decided to tear in to the motor I swaped for, and would you believe...it is a "shortnose". Called my guy who swpped me and we are exchanging back.
So now I am back looking for another one. I think Mazda Heaven has one.
