Thread: Roll bar success!

  1. #1

    Default Roll bar success!

I started at 8 this morning - and it was damn cold, btw. By 10 I had the necessary interior bits out and I was ready for the roll bar. By 1:30 I had the bar bolted to the 4 existing seat belt mounting points, and the seat belts reattached. All of this with only one trip to the hardware store! It's all downhill from here, right???

Thanks for the tips last night! Those first four bolts were definitely a little bitchy, and it took some encouragement from my foot and a little Dremel work to get them all to line up and bite without cross-threading.

I couldn't find a piece of wood that would fly straight enough...

Seats should be in tomorrow... now I gotta get some eyebolts for the harness. I'd call Gary but he's out of town... maybe I need to take a sick day on Monday... hmmmmm.

    Nice avatar...

I got the rest of the install done today. I borrowed a friend with a good cordless drill and a gorilla-strength impact wrench. Everything went according to plan and the bar is done. I spent the rest of the day vacuuming up the aftermath, trimming the deck piece, and changing the fluids & filters. More pics tomorrow when I get a chance. I'm a little sore right now from all that activity, so I'm going to sit on the couch and watch the Mavs.

OH, and by the way... the glass window on the Robbins top clears the M2 Sport bar perfectly, and it looks like I won't have any problems with the hard top, either.

That's good, looks like the only compromise you'll have to make is that your going to carry around 70lbs or however much of roll bar all the time, instead of me switching between wanting to go on a track and wanting to be able to use my HT (which I can't wait to see how my merlot HT looks on my black car, should look pretty nice IMO). That's okay though I don't think I want a roll bar for DD anyway.

I'm going to guess the roll bar only weighs about 30-40 lbs, it's really not that heavy. But as tall as you are, that roll bar wouldn't do you much good - especially on a DD.

Well I'm just sayin' my R feels much heavier than my M did, and that only had AC and soft top deletes that the R doesn't. the R does have some stiffening weight that the M didn't like butterfly brace and frog arms, but I was expecting a lighter feeling car. I will see how it feels with the AC gone tomorrow, and then again once the bar comes out after Laguna.

I don't think that bar would do me much good either, but its the tallest one that will clear a soft top or isn't custom made so it's the best I'm gonna get. Unless maybe if I get hooked on track days then I might try and find a bar that is taller but won't clear the soft top since I would only run the bar on the track. Seeing as I have to remove the bar anyway after Laguna I may look into that if I can find one for close to what I could sell my current bar for, so it wouldn't be $400 out of pocket for a different one.
