I had a '91 Toyota pickup (pre-Tacoma days) with a 2.4L 4cyl and 5spd manual. I got it with 65k on the clock in 95, drove it for 9 years like it was stolen, put 120k more on the clock. Only thing I ever replaced was fluids, tires, brakes, and 3 clutches. Oh, and a paint job (hail damage). I miss that truck. Got 24MPG even with me romping on it all the time. If I were to get a pickup again, it'd be a 90's first-gen Tacoma extended cab stepside (and bag it! and put the TRD supercharger on it!).

Had a '80 Ford Courier while my dad had a '84 Mazda B2000. Mazda parts were expensive but the cheaper Ford parts were mostly interchangable. They were both bomb proof and were only done in by colisions during icestorms. If you find either of those today they are probably extremely well used up and near immpossible to get parts for.I have a '90 Toyota Hilux I bought new with the 4 cyl 22re motor and 5 sp. Again bomb proof and still running with nothing having been replaced other than the usual maintenance. My wife had a '86 Toyota SR5. Again drove the wheels off of it and only traded it because we didn't need two small trucks. Finding parts for either of these Toyotas is extremely easy. Up here the short wheelbase Toyotas are extremely popular for deer camp trucks. You can find them pretty cheap and easily if you don't mind a few dents and camo house paint.
I drive to fast to worry about my cholesterol.

I know you like the later smaller Jeep Comanche, but this is just cool. Overpriced, but cool.

Very cool. And the price is right up Ken O's alley. Get it for the boy, Ken.

There are a couple of older Ford Rangers with a 5 speed on craigslist for around $2000. They might be worth checking out. I would recommend an extended cab if you buy a Ranger. The extra space is nice to have.
