Default Thermostat problem?? (2000 Dodge Ram 5.9 V8)

What would cause a temp gauge to go soaring onto the high side, illuminate the "check engine" light and then suddenly go back to normal operating temp...all while the vehicle is moving at a constant speed?

Did something get sucked into your radiator (like a plastic bag) for a couple of minutes, then blow out, returning temps to normal?

So now that we have determined it's a 2000 truck, what is it? A Chevy? A Ford? V8? V6?

Replace the t-stat and the radiator cap for starters, then see what happens. If that solves you're problem, great. If it doesn't, you're out about 10 bucks and back to square one. What have you got to lose?
