    Default Shift Boot on a 2002 Miata

    Have notice a drip of oil on the garage floor coming out of the 2002 Miata, decided to snoop around today to see what I could find!

    I found both shift boots busted on a 34,000 car, wacky stuff!

    No suprise there... it's a high heat area exposed to lots of crappy elements... it's a shocker they don't go earlier.

    They have probably been on the way out for a while. The drip on the garage floor was my only indicator.

    Anyone know if the 6 Speed uses different boots than a 5 Speed??

    Searching through Mazdacomp, I can't find any different boot for the 6 speed.

    Be sure and put some talc powder on the new ones when you install them. Keeps the rubber from wearing itself out.

    I was curious so I pulled the console in my '99 the upper boot looked great, but the lower boot on the transmission was crusty. The '99 only has 23,000 miles.

    Looks like I will be adding these parts to my annual maintenance!

    Yep pulled out the old 2002 Parts list and it was the same p/n for the boots FOR A 5-speed or a 6-Speed!

    For you kids in the cheap seats those parts numbers are :
    NA01-64-481B & M513-17-480A

    Quick Question when you remove the bolts out of the lower boot does the shifter come out of the car??

    I want to check my sifter but not having any luck in removing the center console. Anyone kind enough to let me know how to remove the center console to get to the shifter? I removed all the screws that I can see but it seems that something is still holding it back and I afraid to use force and break some of the tabs.

    POS...Yes the inner boot holds the shifter in place. Once you get the boot un bolted you have to Jiggle it, just a little bit!!...the shifter that is. It only fits in there one way...
