My brother has an Isuzu Rodeo which recently started running pretty... crappily. He took it to Christian Brothers Automotive, who told him to buy a new truck rather than try to overhaul the engine because parts are so expensive and hard to find. Is this true? I thought Isuzu parts were fairly readily available. Anybody here work on them? He doesn't really want to get rid of it but he also doesn't want to blow a pile of money on a rebuild...
Thoughts?
Did they give him any idea what was wrong with it?

They sold a bunch those first generation Rodeos in the early-mid nineties. If that is the version you have, then you will probably find plenty of them in salvage yards. Still, not the best place for quality engine parts.
On the other hand, if your mechanic tells you to ditch it rather than give him a bunch of money, then maybe you should listen.

Sometimes, when a mechanic is inexperienced with a certain make/model of vehicle, they will just try to convince you it isn't worth fixing because they wouldn't want to be the one stuck with the job. Are you sure it needs an overhaul? Those engines (I assume it has the gasoline V6) are notorious for water leaks in the "valley" under the intake plenum. If it ran dry, an overheated rodeo engine will likely need a rebuild. If it has rod knock, it will need a rebuild. If the bottom end is still solid, it is repairable. Going by your brother's history with vehicles (what you have said here), however, I would recommend he cut his losses and get something that is REALLY easy and cheap to fix and keep running. 4 cyl. ranger comes to mind.
