Does anyone know why, on old dragsters like in the pick below, did they raise the front end up high? Was it to shift the weight to the rear wheels for traction? Did they do this by installing a straight axle?
Just curious. I always thought it was a cool look.

Later on, when tire technology caught up with horsepower, they stopped that silly stuff, put the cars back down on the ground, and went a WHOLE lot faster with a whole lot less hp...
