Anyone here collect coins?

I found a 2004-S proof set nickle in my change Friday night when emptying my pockets. :D

Gotta love it when kids get fancy coin sets.

Proof coins are the ones that are specially struck at the mint and placed in protective holders. They are never touched by human hands - well, until the kids crack 'em open and spend them. They are easy to spot since the backgrounds are VERY shiny and the foreground items are frosted in appearance.

They actually have a term for it... a "dirty proof" ;) hehehe

This one is going in a coin envelope - one of those squares with the round window on it - to protect it.

Can't find my Red Book to look up the value. Not sure exactly how much it'll be worth. The 2001-S proof dime I found a couple of years ago listed for $3.85.

Uh... yes... It's still minted special - frosted reliefs and shiny backgrounds. It's still worth more than a run of the mill coin - ask any coin dealer.

for Christmas I inherited a coin collection from a relative who passed earlier this year.

512 Roosevelt Dimes pre 64
about 100 Mercury dimes
couple gold $2.50 coins from 1909?
a bunch of 1957 silver quarters (don't know the significance of 1957?)
1 dollar silver certificates. i had never seen one before. kinda neat to read the difference compared to todays "notes"
some steel pennies and wheat pennies
a bunch of foreign coins I assume are silver from the 50's. dutch, swiss, italian lira. I was planning on looking these up online next week.

Talking about kids raiding the coin collection. Last summer we were at the neighborhood pool and someone had left 5 euro coins and 3 silver dimes on the table. Expensive snow cone!
