So I've been on the sidelines waiting for the hi-def format winner to emerge, and it's BlueRay. I bought a PS3 for the standard $399 at Target, where they gave a free $40 gift card with the purchase. I just read that PS3 has passed XBox 360 in sales (current; not total) and is increasing in popularity...
Any PS3 fans out there, and any games to recommend?
I got it more for multimedia and DVD viewing. NetFlix has BlueRay movies too....
I think Sammm may have some thoughts as he has a.... Oh wait... never mind.
I have one, and bought it because my PS2 died and I wanted to keep playing Gran Turismo. My choices were to buy a new PS2 -- and be stuck with a platform that was already "old" -- or bite the bullet and get a PS3. As a bonus, the PS3 played Blue-Ray disks, so I've gotten a few of them too (see, for me the deal was the gaming, not the movies).
Anyway, I continue to enjoy all my old titles (GT3, GT4, Hit Man, Baldur's Gate, Ace Combat 4) and wait for GT5 to finally arrive. And in the meantime, I've added a PS3 game -- The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion to the mix. It's a lot of fun, but it's a real... "time user" :D Other than that, I've also bought Ace Combat 5 (not much improvement over Ace 4) and the Formula 1 game for the PS3 (it's very good, but not awesome). All-in-all, I like the PS3, and I'm hoping GT5 rocks. Otherwise I might have been better off with an Xbox360 and Forza.
Except that I couldn't watch those Blue-Ray Disks... ;)
Yes, I own a HD-DVD player. The upside is that it will play 'regular' DVD's and upconvert them. The downside is no new releases will be coming out in HD-DVD. I have a few HD DVD's (and 5 more freebies coming).Quote:

Favorite games: Warhawk, NCAA Football 2008, Resistance: Fall of Man and Call of Duty 4.
The thing that I love about the PS3 is the free internet gaming and the Bluray. Also it is nice to throw a memory card in and look at pictures on a large TV.
The PS3 should also age quite nicely compared to the 360 because it has more grunt under the hood.
The thing I wish it did is play XBOX 360 games.
Recently Bioshock and Mass Effect have come out only on the XBOX 360.
Also Frontlines: Fuel of War has announced that it is dropping the PS3 version. ::Bawl::

i have a ps3 the only games i have for it are COD4, warhawk and tony hawk project8,
it upconverts standard dvds too if i recall correctly
my only complaint is with the online for COD4 it always drops me into an empty lobby WTF!!!????!!!!
Sammm, just for the "grasshopper". What are the pos and con of Blue Ray and HD DVD? If money is burning a hole in the pocket, which one to buy?

Blu-Ray is the winner of the HD format. Wait for prices to come down before you go out and buy one.
I think it's cool. Sony has bad luck with formats.
Betamax: failed
UMD: flop
Memory stick: SD and MMC is pretty much the standard there
MiniDisc: I barely remember these, taken over by mp3 players
So I guess it's time Sony got a format to stick.
In any case, I am not buying a Blu-Ray player until they outright stop making standard DVD discs. And with the rate I buy movies, I can probably hold out a little after that. My TV is an old 27" Standard Def CRT (close to 10 years old I think), and no matter how much I would like to replace it I don't need to. For now, I have other priorities ahead in line.

It's funny... When I worked in radio, we used both Betamax and DAT extensively. While they may have failed with the consumer market, they were fairly successful behind the scenes.Quote:

Yeah, We used Sony U-matic 3/4" Video tapes and DAT audio tapes back in the day at church. I knew that Betamax was a staple for many in the industry and was even upgraded to HD formats. We also had a Tascam 4track compact cassette recorder.Quote:

Yeah, I think Sony was just plain 'ol stoopid on UMD... and the PS Portable for that matter. They had a real, serious opportunity with that combination, but blew it entirely. I don't know where the PS Portable stacks up as far as sales versus other portable platforms. But my guess is if Sony had bitten the bullet and at least initially given UMD's away free with the purchase of their DVDs, they would have significantly increased the sales of the PS Portable, and perhaps saved their UMD format.
I got the XBox 360 for christmas, went in to wally world about a week or so ago and looked at their HD player for XBox it was 170. the next day it was 130. i asked and they shared with me that HD lost the war, bummer for me
But just gives me another reason to buy the PS3.
Yeah I bit the bullet and bought a PS3 when Wally world was giving away a $50 gift card during the holiday season.
I'm eagerly awaiting the GT5P, GT5, NEW Soul Caliber, and NEW Star Wars games coming out soon.
GT and BluRay are what sold me on the PS3. I still wouldn't mind having an Xbox for the Halo capability though.
I've only bought 300 and Blackhawk Down for Blu Ray though. It seems to up convert regular DVDs pretty well. I have Blue Planet on the way from Blockbuster right now, can't wait to check it out.
Next I just need to find a reasonably priced audio setup.
