Been there, done that, keep going from Salida toward Durango and it gets better. I did it the other direction, but fun fun fun.
I'll be taking that highway in about two weeks on my way to the FM open house in Grand Junction. I've done it before, but not in a Miata. Can't wait!
was enjoyable in my Del Slow, can only imagine in the Miata
While you're in the neighborhood, take US550 from Silverton to Ouray, the Million Dollar Highway. Simply gorgeous. Look it up on Google Earth and you'll see why.
Been up there many times on the bike. If they would quit having winter I might move there. We went to Silverton one year with a truck load of dirt bikes and road all the mule and jeep trails to Ouray and Telluride. I love to go during bow hunting season. The aspens are gold and the tourists are done for the year and no one is shooting at everything that moves. You can stay is Silverton for less than $100 per night. Favorite high speed road is US 160 from South Fork to Pagosa Springs (Wolf Creek Pass). 10 miles of 6% grade in each direction, switch backs and tunnel. At 10,000 feet you need all the downhill help you can get. FI might be a blast. Good brake pads are lifesavers on this road.
...and for the Jeepsters, there's always the Alpine Loop from 550 over to Lake City, over the top of Engineer's Peak.
(huff-puff)
Mmm, yeah. I've driven it several times but not since I got my Miata.
