Stars Fans - What's the big deal with Avery?

So right before a game in Calgary this week, Avery flames Dion Phaneuf who is dating Avery's old girlfriend, actress Elisha Cuthbert by saying:

“I'm just going to say one thing. I'm really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada. I just wanted to comment on how, it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about, but enjoy the game tonight."

and for that clever insult he gets suspended? Wasn't he doing his job, getting inside the head of your opponent?

And yet just a month ago when a Boston Bruins fan apparently rattled Avery to the point where he unleashed a torrent of obscenities against her in front of the crowd, the NHL did nothing with the complaint that was filed.

Does NHL commissioner Gary Bettman not realize that Elisha Cuthbert is not really Jack Bauer's daughter and there is little threat of a "24" style revenge?

Granted, Avery isn't the kind of guy I'd want dating my daughter, but I don't understand the reaction by the NHL in these two incidents.

Avery is the biggest douche-canoe in the NHL. Too bad his play doesn't back up his mouth. On the other hand, you would think the NHL would be happy for some extra PR.

I think his past track record has something to do with the NHL's reaction - that and the fact that he "staged" his comments in front of the media. If he had said that to the guy on the ice, I don't think the NHL would give a rat's ass.

Apparently he's a worthless piece of shit in the Stars' locker room, and there's no love lost between him and the rest of the team. Anybody think Brett Hull might lose his job over this whole mess? After all, Avery is Brett's boy...
