Audi CVT cautionary tale...

So my buddy calls me the other day to ask my opinion on a little glitch with his A4 3.2 CVT. He described it as an intermittent surging/slipping. I thought "this won't end well," and told him to expect to buy a new transmission sometime in the near future (his car is out of warranty at 75K miles). My guess was that he'd be looking at a $3-4K at the dealer...

Well, he called me back today to give me the skinny. He took it to the dealer to have them look at it, even though the problem hasn't gotten appreciably worse. Turns out I was right... and he's going to need a new transmission. However, I was a little light on my cost estimate...

Y'all ready?

Any guesses?

Park Place Audi gave him a quote of...

$9,500 to replace the effin' CVT!

And this is why I sold the CVT Murano just weeks after I got out of the warranty. ::Banana:: Now why I replaced it with an out of warranty BMW product, I can't explain. ::Censor::

And to think the Audi Dealer I was dealing with last month got kinda pissy when I questioned the reliability of his cars. ;)

You could buy a wrecked one with lots less miles, for less money and swap it out. Then sell off the rest......

...or, find you a snowmobile and use that. They perfected those CVTs years ago!

The VW (same for Audi) is not known for long term reliability. This is backed up by the Consumer Report last year. After 5 years, they have the same, if not worse, record than the Government Motor!

That is the price to pay to "speak" German! The guys in Park Place, I think they speak French! ::Rant:: Last time I was checking out a MB, they thought I came from "the other side of the track"! They won't even give me the time of the day! ::Censor::

LOL... my good friend Matt tried to buy a Boxster from Boardwalk about 5 years ago. He showed up in flipflops and a a ratty old t-shirt and the salesman wouldn't let him test-drive one. He drove straight from Boardwalk to one of the other Metroplex dealerships and bought his Boxster. I am not sure if it was the same day, but soon after the purchase he visited the Boardwalk salesman. ::BaHump::
