Just heard from a friend that this Saturday is Laps for Charity out at TMS. 3 Laps around the big oval in your own car for $30. Somewhere it claimed that Speed would be up to 75 MPH in single file behind a pace car. Has anyone done this? and if so do they really limit it to 75 or maybe let it creep a little higher? Sounds like it might be fun and even if not the money goes to a good cause anyway.

I've done it several times. The speed really depends on who is in front of you. I was once behind some idiots in Camaros who liked to creep through the corners so they could leave a gap in order to open it up on the straights. Yippee, going fast in a straight line. I would have preferred the opposite. Other times, I've had plenty of room to gain speed.
The crowd also varies. Sometimes the parking lot and waiting line are car shows themselves. Other times, meh.
Wed might go out there. We are having dinner at a friends in Keller, so we might pile in the car and swing by.
It was pretty boring at MWII and the speed was 90+ mph.
I've done it a couple times, and it's fun if for no other reason, you get to do 3 laps out on the big oval under the lights. The pace truck does a pretty steady 75 to 80 MPH, but like JJ said, it can be fun ripping through the corners, assuming you don't have some doucher in front of you that wants to pretend the straights are drag strips.
First couple times I did it, the line was one huge snaking queue like you see @ amusement parks. Last time, they actually setup individual queues so that you didn't have to keep starting your car to move it 30 feet every 10 minutes - much smarter. With that you can also pick who you line up behind. The smart thing to do is once you line up go talk to the d00dz in front of you and say hey I wanna rip through the corners, so be sure to stretch out on the straights, and most people are like "hey yeah good idea".
They say they'll pull you immediately for passing or excessive speed, but I've never seen anyone pulled (never saw anyone try to pass though).
If you've never been out on the big oval, I highly recommend it. It's really a totally different experience, even if it's not competitive.
It's is a trip to feel how steep that banking is, especially in 1 and 2. I've seen 105 coming in and out of 4. It's a fun experience and the money goes to the kids.
I wound up having family come into town last weekend so I didn't get to go out there after all. hopefully I can catch the next one.
I was there, in the infield, and the best sight was a whole string of exotics followed by a Smart Car. I would have paid for a picture of that. Second funniest sight was a whole string of Smart Cars. The scariest vision was a big Ford pickup with about 6 feet of ground clearance. I just stood there waiting for it to tip over.
Ive done it with my husband and his dodge group. its so much fun. the money does go to a good cause. the best is to see the smart car club go. its like will they tip over on the turns or not. lets try to go this weekend as a group. Say Sept. 11 at 5 to 7 as a club or 7 to 10 if not. we could tailgate before if you all would like or just meet in one of the lots. its alot of fun so lets all try to be there.

have to get in a autox joke. $10 dolla a lap, that's like going to an autox
there is a lap car but you get to go pretty fast. they base the pase on the type of car. I have noticed that in the past few years, the "smart cars" go slow. I have gone out with my husbands DFW Dodge club (boys with hemi's) and they have gone like 80. Its so fun to go high on those turns. you have to try it.
according to my husband who has done this with his car club every year, we need to contact the tracks site and reg our club. they will give us a meeting place at the track and regester everyone there. this is really the best way to do this so we can run as a club. pass this info to anyone in this club who does these things so we can make a good showing there.
