Annual Cat Replacement

It's time for what has unfortunately become my annual 25,000 mile cat converter replacement. The previous owner had used the cut-the-old-one-out, weld-the-new-one-in method before I got the car, so that is how the last two replacements were done. The shop on Hemphill in South Fort Worth where the last two were done charges $40 for the labor from whoever in the shop seems to have the least experience with welding and measuring equipment at the time, with me supplying the cat.

I have the new cat (Magnaflow 41004 this time) ready to go - does anyone have any better ideas as to where to get the old one cut out and new one welded in?

Why not have flanges welded on so you can just bolt it in yourself?

I had that done a few years ago. The place I took it to was Pronto Muffler in Plano. Not near you but they do good work at a reasonable price.

Don't know how close to Weatherford you are but on the west side of Weatherford is a place called Chuck's Muffler and Brake. Guy who runs the place is named Todd. He is an artist when it comes to exhausts.

You might want to check out the coil pack. Having to install
a new cat annually isn't normal.

+1 I forgot to mention that they should be lasting MUCH longer than that.

I've got the same situation here, new cat every year for the past 3 yrs. Time again. If you put the flanges in so that they can be bolted in don't you still have the problem of getting the flanges welded on to to the new cat everytime? Also, would there be the issue of getting the measurements right? I haven't see any off the shelf bolt-on cats available for std trasnmission miata, are they available?

No you don't. There are bolt-on ones for the miata. Ebay is a good place to look along with the miata specific shops on the net. +1 on it not being a yearly thing.
