Resale Value?

Anyone knows where to find the differential resale value of a Miata been damaged and repaired :?:

The story was that some Dumb AXX infornt of me backed up while I was sitting at the red light :evil: The Dump AXX's Pathfinder ended up on top of the hood of my 99 Touring. The hood was sliced open in two places and the engine dropped. I am sure there are a lot more damage. The car is still in shop waiting for the adjuster to show up.

Even if his insurance fixed my Miata, I am sure the resale value of my car will go down. Also, I have heard of people getting money from insurance company to compensate for the decrease in resale value.

I will greatly appreciate if anyone can point me in the right direction to ease my pain :evil:

iirc their insurance might pay you the depreciation value also. they did on my neighbors lexus when it was nealry totaled.

That sux Gab! :( Sorry, but I don't know who you would contact in a case like this. Start researching on the internet and see if you can find some info there. Keep hounding that insurance company to be sure you get what's coming to you!

That blows! Did the other driver at least explain why in the hell they were attempting to reverse themselves? And you say the engine dropped, how fast were they going in reverse?

It's probably totalled. If repairs will cost 80% of the value (65% if you have Amica) they'll total it out. For a 99 Miata with that kind of damage, you're probably toast. The good news would be (a) you don't have to drive a repaired car and (b) you can go buy a Mazdaspeed Miata for cheap!

The Dump AXX was going full blast on reverse at the red light after we stopped for over a minute. He was gasing it so hard that his SUV climbed on top of my hood and both of his rear wheels were sitting on top of my strut tower bar when it was said and done!

Now the front wheels are bowled out. There were fluid on the flatbed truck too. The hood, both fenders, bumper cover and both headlights are toasted. From what I can see the valve cover is broken. I think the engine mounts are broken and causes the engine to drop :( The biggest fear that I have is the damage to the strut tower/suspension and the steering :cry:

He hardly speak English at all and seems to be some new immigrant from eastern Europe. This happened in Arlington and the APD gave him a citation for "driving reverse on street" and impounded the SOB's SUV. His insurance is taking their sweet time to drag this out as long as they can. I wonder I should get one of those "TV lawyer" to get every penny from them to "compensate for my pain and suffering"

From the Kelly Blud Book the damage differential for private party resale is only $610 :?: The dealer trade-in value differential is even lower :!: I really don't think it is fair and adequately to cover my "pain an suffering" to see my Miata in such bad shape :cry:

From the sounds of the damage, I wouldn't be researching resale differential values. I'd be researching the current market value for cars similar to yours, so you can make sure to get a proper settlement from the insurance company. I would hazard a guess your car isn't going to be fixed. :(

Sorry to hear about this, Gabriel. At least be thankful that the SOB had insurance - there are plenty of idiots out there driving around without it.

If you're looking to claim 'pain & suffering' you will have to get a lawyer and take him to court. The insurance company won't play that game.

It looks like from the Autotrader that both the dealers and the private paties are selling around $10.5K plus extra for add-on goodies. You guys think it is fair price to ask for 10.5K plus the cost (when new) for the KYB, FM front bar. I also has the new Rota wheels on it too.

For the wheels and hardtop, can I just take them off? Any suggestion?

Fortunately this is my Touring and not the Sport!

From your description, it's possible there is some frame damage, possible separation in front, and if that is the case, it's going to be a total, imho.

Also, if the engine was running when the valve cover was ripped open, look for some possible engine damage...

Definitely sucks...

You won't be able to just remove the wheels and leave the car with nothing, but if you have another set of wheels (like the OEM ones), then you can substitute those for the Rotas.

Same thing with the KYBs and the FM bar, although you'll have to pull them off yourself and give them the stock stuff. Generally when a car is totalled you'll be given the opportunity to remove any aftermarket parts you've added (provided you have something to replace them, in the case of things like shocks or wheels) before the car is sold off as salvage.

The hard top? Take it - it's yours to keep. Unless it was damaged, in which case I'd leave it with the car and have that factored into any appraisal.

Hell, they probably wouldnt notice the front bar missing anyway. Also, with some stuff you can just put it in the car. I know people who take their aftermarke radio out and put the stock one in the seat. If you have to get a set of steel wheels and pepboy 4/$100 tires to replace the rotas.

I totalled the original molestervan, and by the time the insurance investigator showed up, I'd stripped the interior! They still gave me a decent check. OTH - it was 1981.

At least the guy stopped at the front suspension and didn't run over you :wink:

If they decided to fix it and the after market parts are broken. Can I demand direct replacements rather than OEMs? I wll not make sense if one KYB is broken and they give me one OEM strut and leave me with 3 KYB!?

Usually,depends, the insurance carrier will only cover the cost of stock pieces. I had the same issue when I had a problem with my VW a couple of years back... I had to replace the H&R Coilover and BBS rim on my own...

I don't trust those adjuster and body shop guys. The initial estimate is only $3200 w/o frame or mechanical damage!?

Today I go over to the body shop and they say they need more $ for fixing the fenders, new radiator and some plugs on the engine. Still report as no mechanical or structural damage. I guess they want to replace the broken plugs of the engine and fire it see if it will fire up again. As far as the frame/structure, I demand to have the alignment check and redone with print out. This way I can see how mess up it is and see if I can get it back to spec. Fortunately I still have the alignment print out and receipt from the last alignment done at the end of last April.

Every time I talk to the adjuster and the body shop I keep demanding OEM parts only (for all the panels etc). Also, I already lined up Marvel Speed (Don is the master mechanic of Town North Mazda) to give it a thorough "physical" when I get it back.

At this point I am extremely skeptical of how little damage they are finding or letting me know. Time will tell. I will be happiest guy if they are not lying to me.

I will keep you guys posted and thanks for the concern and support!

Please tell me that you went to a body shop of YOUR choosing and not one suggested by either insurance company or the other party...if you went to one of theirs, you might want to stock up on Vaseline and muscle relaxants.
