i was on miata.net and someone was telling me about the 1.8 liter motors having issues with thrust bearings all of a sudden going out, but a member told me it was on the early NB models. now dont the 94+ miata motors have 1.8 liter motors aswell? if so, does that problem occur with those like the NB's?
The NA 1.8 ('94-'97) is different than the NB 1.8 ('99-'05). The early '99s had the thrust bearing problem IIRC.
The 1.8 in the 94-97 cars is rock solid. I'd say most of the "problem" 1.8 motors in the early NBs have already given up the ghost and have been replaced. I don't know this for a fact, but at least it sounds logical... right?

The thrust bearing of the 99 was traced back to one of the four machines that make that component. Therefor, the early 99's have one in four chance of having this problem. Since mine has 144K miles on the clock, I am sure it does not have this problem. Therefor, you should pay me what I ask for to buy my thrust-bearing-problem free 99! ;-)
awesome. because i just looked at a 97 miata and it drove rock solid and that was the biggest question i had about the 1.8 motors... i know about the SNC and the LNC with the 1.6 motors, but i deffinatly wanted something newer than a car with a 1.6 in it.

thats also a good thing to know about the NB cars. i was told about the thrust bearing problem, but i never knew what the chances of getting one was. even though iv found some good condition mild priced NB's, that 1 in 4 chance of getting a motor that will fail isnt worth the risk to me
