They are pretty good on heads, but never used them for building a motor. If you are in Dallas, check out Day's Custom Engines.
I'm looking for a shop to lighten/knifedge my crank. Any other suggestions?
None from me, but I am interested in the same thing as well.
FWIW, the Z guys I know out here that don't use our friend Kyle at IPP all use Day.
I've had good work done by Arlington Automotive Machine in the past. They do everything from stock rebuilds to race motors, so I bet they could be of service.
I haven't had them do anything special, but they've done more extensive work for a friend of mine - I think he had a crank modified there.
I've done biz with Automotive Machine and Supply for years. It's nearly always been air-cooled VW work, but in my experience with motors there wasn't anything they didn't do there, and do well. Give them a call and just ask Steve if they do what you are asking. If it's not their strong suit, or they don't do what you need, he should have a good recommendation for you. That's always been my favorite thing about dealing with Steve and AM&S. Really a trustworthy business.
I talked to John Day about this a few months ago. He said the one he had Automotive Machine do looked like crap. He is the one who sent Gary's crank to Cali to get it done. It was slightly more, due to shipping, but it looked WAY BETTER. The one from Automotive Machine had notches cut into the counterweights to balance it, instead of doing a smooth machining of the weights. So for crank work like that, take it to Day's Custom Engine in N. Dallas and have him send it to his guy in Cali.
Just got off the phone with John Day:
$650 to get it done at Day's. This includes shipping and everything.
