Strange 2-cycle engine problem

I have a Toro weed-eater (with a split boom so you can swap out different attachments). It will start and run when it's choked and laying on its side.

As soon as I turn it upright to use it, it dies. I replaced all the fuel lines but still have the same prob. WTF? :confused:

maybe the carb needs a rebuild.

I had a similar problem with an old Ryobi when I replaced the rotted fuel lines I didn't have enough line in the tank to allow it to pull fuel. YMMV

Yep, that was it! Halthang told me to check the tank for crud. After I drained the gas, I realized the new line was too short. It runs now,
but still doesn't like going full throttle. It will bog down. Could that be spark plug related?

That would be a fuel mixture problem. Your carb should have two screws...one for idle speed and the other for mixture. Turn the mixture screw in maybe 1/4 turn (that should lean it out some) and see if that fixes your problem. If its worse turn it out 1/2 turn....you get the idea.

hmm... threadjacking this veritable treasure trove of garden machinery knowledge.... my dad has a bum shoulder, and finds it almost impossible to pull-start the mower, weedeater, and blower.... is there any way to make the easier to start (general ideas, or point me in a direction)

Use electric versions....they will be lighter than gas ones and trigger start. If he has a bad shoulder, how is he going to carry/push them around the yard?

Home Depot has a Troy Bilt gas trimmer that has an optional electric starter that temporarily attaches to the trimmer to get it started. IMO, ALL electric grass trimmers suck, as well as most gas trimmers.

he does it because he is stubborn, and he actually enjoys yard work (like me enjoying washing my cars) .... he can carry things just fine, its the jerking motion he can't do

he has pull start models because he is cheap and stubborn. i was pushing a push button start model, but it was $40 more.... i think it was the troy bilt you mention, lol

so now, i get a phone call to come pull start things when he wants to work in the yard

FYI...new spark plug, no change. New in-tank fuel filter, runs like new again!
