Engine noise?
I have a 1991 model with 165,00 well maintained miles. at around 4,000 rpm(in neutral setting still) there is a rattling noise. Makes the same noise driving when changing gears at around 4,000 rpm. No noise at any rpm as long as under load. Loose heat shield, lifters, rod bearings?

How bad/loud is it?? It's really hard to diagnose a noise over the intarwebz even in person it can be very difficult. Can't say I've heard the noise you are refering to as far as I know. My car has a lot of rattles too but I write it off as it being a 20 year old car with 177 thousand miles on it and try not to stress out too much over it. I just got done doing an SCCA road rally with it today :)

Loud enough to hear it over the normal engine sounds.

Bring it by Track Dog Racing and we can take a listen.

I had a rattle like that on my '92 back when it was stock. It turned out to be one of the exhaust heat shields on the header downpipe. I identified it by hitting things with a rubber mallet until I found the offending one, and then tore it off. Rattle gone.

Broken spot welds on the heat shields.
A common occurrence, I have to weld these up most every clutch job.

Checked it out again and when I change gears at around 6,000 rpm no noise. I'm thinking heat shield also.
