2001 Motor in a 1995

Hi everybody! New here and this is my first post.

I'm helping my son get into a Miata to use as a daily driver. He's a previous G35 coupe driver and had to give it up when he lost his job. We're both thinking the Miata will give him the same "rush" with a lot less cost.
We have located a clean 95 but it has 220,000 miles on it. I also found a 70,000 mile motor from a 2001, but I'm not sure that it's the same or if it will even bolt up to the transmission.

Any advice will be greatly appriciated.

It is a lot easier to stick with the same vintage motor. Plus The 2001+ cars have VVT and require premium fuel.

2001 was the first year of the VVT engine. That will probably complicate matters. Plenty of first gen 1.8 engines out there.

You can have the '95 head worked and drop it on the '01, to get around that.

also Jimmy at Eric Japan has 30k +- 95 1.8's for about $800

Like Rogue said, there are ways around the VVT setup...if you don't want to mess with the electronics.
You can simply ignore/not use the VVT or retrofit an older head and not even have to worry about it.

Rogue's the man and will steer you in the right direction for your needs. Well, the needs of your son, anyway. ;)

yet i have only put 87 in mine :clap:

you can even put 87 in a stock turbo car. any post ~2000 cars have that you must put 91/93 but they have enough electronic crap to tell 87 from 89 from 91 from 93 from 101.

I put 87 in my 2001. The sticker says premium recommended. Premium does make it that much easier to light up the tires though.

I have 269,000 miles on my engine. Does the 220,000-miles engine need replacing for some reason other than mileage?

No, it runs fine. I was just worried about the reliability of it since it would be his daily driver.

I think I'm going to go ahead and buy the car and do the JDM swap lioke Rogue suggested. It seems to make the most sense. Eric Japan can get me the motor for $875 and supposily it will have less than 30K on it.

This is huge for Miatas where you can now "come up on the [intake] cam" for the entire RPM range. I dont' want this for my turbo car considering it's already too fast, but it would be awesome on my daily.

to bad there is no a squirt for 01+

there is adaptronic but it's vvt tuning is 2d, x rpm = x *advance. you will get a lot let gas per mile.
