E85 Storage

Considering having the NC tuned for E85, but there are no E85 stations in my immediate area, so I'm wondering about storage and preventing moisture from being absorbed.

Is it feasible to keep a 20 or 40 gallon supply stored at my house (I have a separate detached garage) that I can take to the station in Dallas and fill-up occasionally?

I figure I'll go through about 15-17 gallons/week, since I currently use 10-12 gal/wk of 93 octane.

Will I be able to store a large quantity for up to a month without it getting "bad?" Would it be better to just have several 5-gallon fuel jugs?

I used to keep it around for the Evo with no real issue, just make sure that the cap is on tight.

Are your injectors big enough? TYpically you need to size up 30%...

Just make sure the insurance does not know about this!

In the NC fuel system e85 ready? it will eat normal gas fuel lines and you have to prep the system with lots of cleaning. you will go thought 2+ fuel filters in the first month or 2 as it brakes down any deposits in your tank.

Unless there's something weird in the Miata fuel system, I would not expect E85 to cause issues like that.

On the Evo X at least, there are two parts that get eaten by E85. A fuel filter "sock" on the end of the fuel pump and a hose on the fuel pump. A replacement line and an Evo 8/9 sock are needed (and not a big deal since you have to go to a walbro to supply enough fuel anyway).

E85 is STUPID powerful (more than your $$$ race gas) and it cools things down considerably. It's awesome if you're boosted. I read an article on a carburated mustang where it lowered the intake temperature 100*. If your car & fuel delivery system can handle it, the torque gains alone (with a retune) make it worth it.

NA? Not sure I'd hassle with it. To get the most advantage out of it, you'll want to advance timing...

I have not read the rules for ST in some time, but I don't think you can change the injectors or the fule pump. Will you gain anything with the stock injectors and fule pump?

I'd bet cash OZMDD put little to no thought at all into this E85 plan before he posted it up here! ::StirTheP

Yep, have given this no thought whatsoever, and expect no power or torque gains, not to mention the unexpected jump to DP, all so I can be "green" and win at BMW and NTAXS autox's! ::Banana::

I'll fill you guys in on the details as they become more confirmed rather than theoretical, but I have good reason to believe that I can convert without major issues, and the power/tq gains will be significant enough to offset the additional hassle of E85.

Also, my tuner thinks the stock injectors have enough headroom for an NA tune. Obviously, that is a limiting factor for me, since the car must stay STR-compliant.

3% gain in power? Not worth the effort.

I would ask two questions before using E85. What is the btu content of e85? What is the composition of the other 15%? Both answers may surprise you.

Thx, but I'm not going to debate the merits of E85 in this thread. First, I'm looking at the practical logistics of E85, and second, there are too many engineers on this forum who will crucify my math, since I'm a pure science guy, and the real-world numbers never match theory. :)
