Get a vent free set so your heat doesn't go up the chimney. Like most things in life, you get what you pay for.

What Sammmmm said. The cheapest ones will not look very realistic and you will need to open your flue. If you only plan on having a fire when the outside temp isn't too cold and don't mind the apperance you can cheap out.....I bought a kit off Ebay a few years ago.
They are really easy to install, just pick up some of the yellow gas-specific teflon tape for the fittings. No need to buy the leak detector stuff, just mix a little soapy water and spray it on.
since its a rental you might not feel like going to the trouble, but I cleaned and painted the walls of the fireplace with some reflective paint, and put a nice layer of black volcanic rock on the floor. It really spruces up the look and helps the heat reflect into the room. A buddy of mine put crushed glass on the floor of his fireplace and that is really neat, but more expensive.
The vented logs are very affordable if you are budget-minded, and they work well with the reflective paint. Some heat does escape up the flue, but you can adjust the flue to be open only a small amount, and there is some peace-of-mind in not having to trust the vent-free design to work properly.
VFR is right about the appearance of nicer kits compared to the budget ones, but I personally never even notice mine anymore, since I keep a screen in front of them anyway to keep the kid/cats out. Its kind of like ceiling fans: some look a lot better on display with all the others in the store, but you rarely look at your fan once its up.
All good advise. Get the stuff on the bottom that glows like coals. Makes it look more realistic.
A hobo trash can fire would be waaaaay more fun.
