I miss my miata :(

Well guys, several months ago I sold my 99, and now I hate myself for it! It had payed for a trip out of state to see if I could pursue my racing dreams but nothing ever came out of it. So I bought a ford to build into a drag car, what the hell was I thinking? I hate ford, and I want my "girly" of a miata back!!!!!!!!! :punchout:

Well the point of this topic is the 1.6 vs 1.8 99 engines. It took me about 2 days, 9 hours total, to completely pull out and rebuild my 99 engine with new rings/bearings and it was quite fun! How does the 1.6 engine compare to the 1.8 in the 99 miatas? I know the 99 is a non interference engine, and you never had to adjust valves in the head, what about the 1.6? I may try to get me another 99 after I sell my mustang, but just thought i'd drop back on here and say I am back :D

Unless you are outside of the US, the 1.6 was never in a US spec '99 model. Unless your building a turbo 1.6, I wouldn't waste any time with trying to get a 1.6 into '99.

I meant buying a 90-93 1.6, I can get one much cheaper than a 99

I know the 1.8L in the 94-97 are a little different than the 1.8 in the 99-00 correct?

OK, the 1.6 is the "small block" version of the '94-97 1.8. A few changes were made to the '99-00 (solid lifters, vics), and further changes were made to the '01-05. IMHO the 1.6 is weak on power, personally I would look for a 94 or 95 for not too much more than the '90-93

The 99/00 has a better flowing head than the 94-97. 96 is when ODBII came out. Some like me would prefer a 94/95 as the lack of ODBII means you can change out the ECU and still pass inspections. The 94-97 has lower compression which takes boost a little better. If you are going to boost it, a 94/95 with a 99/00 head is a good combo.

So if I swap a 99 head on a 95 I would need to swap ECU aswell?

I buy 1.6 cars only because they are lighter and cheaper. If you want a 1.6 car you need to get one that's ~$700 cheaper than a 1.8 offering to justify the cost of the Torsen swap. The only other "problem" you'll want to fix on a "properly running, modern" engine swap for a 1.6 is the batch to sequential fuel injection by adding two wires.

You can run any 1.8 on 1.6 electronics, but why do that when you can buy my MSpnp9093 on the cheap and tune any engine you want (VVT head needs VVTuner), (MSpnp will not run batch-injection). You also want to convert to a CKP because CMP will suffer from too much spark-scatter.

All Miata engines are "non-interference" until you deck the head one time, ask me how I know, lol. This isn't a concern until you over-rev or break a timing belt...but that's all on you.

I would love to get a 1.6 and turbo it, but the 99 looks so much nicer IMO. As for what you stated mr brg, I will look deeply into that, I want to get it done right and have a nice, gas saving street toy and a miata is what I truly want! again :(

I think a lot of people with low standards runn 99 swaps in either a 1.6 or 1.8 car and never complain.

I run a 1.8 in a 89 NA and yes I have low standards.

Well I am debating on having a NASA spec miata or having a badass street miata, still undecided but I want to get another one before march!

You don't have to worry about trash stealing an SM parked outside XYZ store.

Just to reiterate what's already been said: if you get an OBDII car and end up ever putting a new ECU in you will have to swap the stock ECU back in come inspection time. This is where I'm headed in near future...

A smarter choice is probably to get a 94-95 car so you don't have to worry about it...

Where I live we don't enforce emissions, I myself am a state inspector :thumrigh:

Is that a roundabout way of offering inspection services?

Unfortunately if you are in a emissions county I cannot even look at your car, or the dealer can get a $10,000 fine and I lose my license.

We have diesels roll through some inspection places like at quik lubes that are rolling black coal, yet they pass every time. Us being a dealership we tend to stick to our costumers.
