I looked at a used '99 today at a small used car lot. It has only about 120,000 miles on the odometer and looks not too worn. But, it has a salvage title because of it was rear ended. The bumper has a few small dents. The biggie in my mind is the diff was broken and has been welded back together.
Am I being too cautious about a hit in the rear that would break the diff? I'm concerned about other damage.
The carrier has areas in the ears designed to break in a rear-end accident. I wouldn't use that as a guide. If you are really cone-cerned, I would take it to a shop that can check the frame.
And how many cars would this make?

My thoughts exactly. I passed on buying the car. The lot owner says he did not know the diff had been broken. He did know about the rear end collision.
He seemed like a nice guy, a real car guy, but not a Miata enthusiast.
