Why is is it so hard for them to make a reliable slave cylinder? I have lost track of how many I have either rebuilt or replaced on my car. I'm not sure if the heavy duty pressure plate is causing them to go out faster or what but I just went out to my car to go to lunch and the damn thing is completly out. This was a brand new unit from O'reilly's that I put on last month. So does anyone have any recomendations for a replacement? Am I better off going to the dealer and buying a new one?
Oh wow, That's way too quick. Might have something to do with the pressure plate. Even though they are a pain to change I would warranty it out and if the new one goes out just as fast I would lean towards your thought on the pressure plate being too much for it.
I think you just got a bad one. The prices have come down and so has the quality.
I'm right there with you though, I stopped rebuilding after about the 3rd time and it only lasting a year. Maybe Napa has better quality.
Once the bore is pitted at all, a rebuild is worthless IMO.
But you're right...definitely a very weak spot on the car.
Its just as cheap to get a whole slave as a rebuild kit these days.
I use Castrol GT in mine, and got over 4 years.
Castrol is easier on the rubber parts, from my MG days.
Pepboys used to have Castrol but no longer, not sure where to find it.

I also read others on the pointy board had good luck with NAPA units so I'll give them a shot. I'll still warranty this one and keep it in the trunk as added insurance. I also plan to replace the with the long version of the flexible line to eliminate the metal loop. Last time I did this I added a speed bleeder which really made it easy to bleed.
Rouge I'll look for it and let you know if I find some. I had some as well but used the last of it on the last install. For some reason I think I bought it at Wally World but that was a few years ago.
I had to buy that Castrol GTLMA online last time cause I couldn't find it, I put it in when replacing the line with a stainless one.
I'll look for it next time I'm at work to see if any AutoZone stores still have any stashed somewhere.
Might want to retitle your thread to read rebuilt slave cylinders since Mazda has nothing to do with what is sold at O'Really's or NAPA. I've never had an issue with the ones I've sourced from Mazdacomp though I do replace them every time I change the clutch which is every other year on the solo car.
As for the Castrol GTLMA, practically no one carries it in store any more. Not Vatozone, not Orilley's, not Wallyworld, and not at Pep Boys either. I was seraching around before doing my brake flush. Castrol seems to have stopped making it too, they just call it DOT 4 now. You can still find old stock of GTLMA online in some places. The DOT 4 stuff looks like this.

As for their higher performace stuff, you'll want to look from their React or SRF fuilds. Small note: They are not cheap, >$50 per qt.
SRF is racing brake fluid. You'll find that in Grand-Am and IRL pits.Quote:

Picked up a new slave from NAPA yesterday and installed it along with a longer SS clutch line from TDR. Let's see how long this one lasts.
Oh and you can add NAPA to the list of stores that don't carry Castrol brake fluid.
