I've been wanting to learn how to weld for a long time, but can't seem to find a continuing education/night class that will get me started and I'm not one to just go buy and welder and try to figure it out.
Does anyone know of a welding class in the McKinney area? I'm more looking for a class to just kick start my efforts, not anything like a formal welding certification thing.
Thoughts? Comments? Etc?

Try some of the JuCos in the area... perhaps they have such classes.
ccage might chime in with what to look for in an instructor.
Yeah... no such luck... the one's I have found are more for those wishing to use it as a profession and willing to pay $3,000+ for certifications.Quote:

I'm looking for a good school, too. There seem to be two school options out there -- the professional schools that offer certification courses for big money, and (as everyone's already said) the local community colleges.
I'm in Frisco (closer to you than to FWMiata), so I'm pretty much in the same boat. While I'd love to develop professional welding skill, I don't want to invest the $3-5k and full time study right now. The community college option would be dead perfect, except that the Collin County doesn't offer anything, and Dallas County's only campus that offers courses in Welding Technology is Mountain View College -- which is located SW of downtown Dallas, essentially in the area S of I-30, NW of Hwy 67, and inside Loop 12. That's a hell of a drive (and a crappy part of town) so I haven't really been able to convince myself to do it.
Maybe at some point I'll get with a friend or two up here and make the trek for some good classes. From what I can tell they have a great lab, etc.
In the meantime I keep looking for other options. And I keep welding things together, cutting them apart, etc. :)

yeah if you have access to a welder, that is cool. i can weld and it will semi hold, but i woulnt trust it for anyhting more than art.... i wish i had a welder here though.
