Redo my steering wheel leather?

I seem to remember a few posts about this in the past, but I cannot find them in a search.

Anyway, because of SCCA classing, I must keep my stock steering wheel. However, I want to have a professional sew new leather cover on the rim. Has anyone had this done locally? Who did it and would you recommend them?

I have replaced my steering wheel once with an original in great shape, but with the age of the product, it does not last long. I think some new leather might last longer.

Plus, I can choose a color to make it look all JDM, yo. ;)

I think Titus found a DIY way to replace the leather to save a lot of $$$. I checked with a place in Rockwall and they wanted $250 to replace it.

Easier and cheaper to find a replacement OEM wheel. If you decide to recover, I have a shredded one in the garage I'll trade for a 6-pack! :D

$129.00 for the cover... install it yourself, or another $100.00 for installation. About the same as the guy in Rockwell. They have a lot of choices.

Stan and Sue had their NC wheel covered in alcantara with a centering stripe. Check with them.

I had to buy some extra supplies that did not come with it (some glue, and a couple extra needles IIRC). It was a pain in the ass to do but came out great. I bet I put at least 8 hours into it, doing it for no more than an hour at a time. In my searches I turned up 3 companies that will do the whole thing (the one I got the kit from, the one in Rockwall, and another), but all wanted $250+ for it once you consider shipping a core to them, etc.

I have used wheelskins on an OTM in the past and like them, but it is a much different animal than what I linked to. The wheelskins don't cover the spokes, and I had leather damage on the spokes. It also goes over the stock leather rather than replacing it, making the wheel fatter. Not sure if that could be protested?

I've put wheelskins covers on the steering wheels of all my vehicles for the past 15 years or so. They're high quality, feel great, last a long time, etc. I don't know about the arcane rules of SCCA, but in general I can't recommend the wheelskins covers highly enough.

The June SCCA Fastrack specifically states that alternative or additional wheel covers would be allowed under the comfort and convenience clause. I might have to try one of these Wheelskins.
