Turret Clunk

i've been noting a clunk coming from my shifter/turret area whenever i let off the clutch and press the gas. i decided to check it out today, and the turret was completely dry so i filled it up with oil and checked if the clunk went away. nope, its still there and the turret is empty again. filled it up again. same results. idk where the oil is going?

5 speed or 6 speed?

5 speed turret is separate from the transmission and uses its own oil, either gear oil or 30 weight, depending on your preference.
6 speed turret is part of the transmission and uses the transmission's gear oil.

Yep no need to fill the turret on a 6 Speed.

It sounds like it's happening right after the clutch engages when the car is moving only

I found the culprit.

The joint where the transmission meets the driveshaft has some play in it. How can I fix it??

I believe that is what is called a U-Joint.

When my driveshaft went out I was lucky enough to pick up a used one from Track Dog Racing. You should also replace the seal while your at it. It was an easy job on my 94.

have to replace the whole driveshaft most likely?

are 6 speed driveshafts the same as 5 speed as long as it's for a 1.8?

I would call TDR and ask to be sure. Buying a used one is the easy fix, I don't know if they are serviceable or not.

I think Driveline Supply in Hurst (10 @ Precinct Line) will fix them.

Pressing out u-joints is not that tough of a job. Probably done 20 of them on my jeeps over the years. Taking it to Jimmy's shop is probably a good solution. Ask them to check the balance when they are done, makes a world of difference if the new joint is different than the old.

Miata u-joints are sealed and not easily serviceable.

Miata's aren't Jeeps. ;)
