I am wondering if I might be able to borrow a little time from someone this Sat at Auto X to take a listen to my freakin clutch?
It is sounding worse and worse, I hope I am not about to have to replace it already.
It sounds ok when depressed but when I let it out,...sitting still it rattles like nobodys business.
its annoying the crap out of me and is just plain embarrasing.
Any help will be greatly appreciated, I dont know what could be causing this. :cry:
If you park it in the midst of Miata shanty town, you won't be able to keep the guys away from it. I'll listen to it too, but I'll need beer.

Bottom line I have a beer once ina blue Moon since the above stated but consider a beer a small price to pay for a potential propper diagnosis...lol,

Ummm...Sorry, I was kidding - you don't know me. Shiner would be great; however, what I know about clutches could fit into the bottle cap and less about Miatae. Is it possible it isn't the clutch and something else is rattling?
I wasn't kidding about parking it amongst the Miatae guys, though. They'll hear it and have the hood up in no time at all :lol:

throwout bearing or the cat heat shield vibrating...betting on the latter.
hhmm it seems to be coming from maybe a little bit in front of the shifter location, cept under the car.
if it is the throwout bearing is it better to just go ahead and replace the whole clutch?
I read the stock clutch usualy last around 80K, forgive me I am ignorant when it comes to this.

My '90's tranny would rattle at idle, especially if I had the A/C on. I also discovered the noise was worse if the fluid was low in the tranny. I had to learn to live with it. But I'm not sure it's the same sound. I'll give it a listen too.
BTW, when I replaced the clutch and bearings, it made no differance in the noise.
When I bought the car the throwout bearing, or something of the like would make an awefull imbarrasing noise in idle after I let out the clutch in neutral, first, and sometimes 2nd, it did this for 3 weeks before I attend my first autocross in the Miata. After the first run the noise was completely gone, & it hasnt made a peep since.
I have no idea why, but it worked. Are you running this weekend?? If not, maybee something to consider?? :P

Just checked the Cat heat shield its tight and the noise if farther up towards the engine....crap!!!

Also it makes the same noice if A/C is on or off.
I wont be running the car just coming out to meet some of you guys and hang out....I do drive it pretty hard though, maybe I will take it out and do some dounuts or something to see if it goes away...lol.
I will try anything at this point, other than the chattering the car is real solid.
My 99 rattles also, I am almost certain it is the throwout bearing, When I push the pedal down the noise stops.

Mine has done it as long as I can remember and I bought it with 6,000 miles. It now has 70 something. I dont think it is critical.

Yes, if you go to the trouble of pulling the tranny, do the clutch, pressure plate, bearings, AND seals.

I wonder since My bad hip is my Clutch leg, how much more stiff is the ACT Clutch?,...if you could put it in a %'age.
I would like a stronger Clutch in case I eventualy go with a Turbo, but I have to be able to shift the car.
I suffer from alot of pain but I have not yet had any problems resulting from shifting the car with the stock setup than I normaly do.
