okay so i found this cool avatar adn want to use it but
i found it at work so saved it and emailed it to home
then when i try to dl and save it, it only lets me save it as a bmp
running windows xp pro and i thought i was smarter than this, when i jsut straight dl it from hotmail it opens up a web browser and show the gif.
and saving it as bmp and changing file extension is not working either.
any ideas i can try when i get back home ?

You should be able to open it under 'MS Paint' (or another Photo Editor) and then do a 'Save As' to change the file extension to a JPG.
It what sammm mentioned doens't work, email it to me... I can compress it a bit more and still retain full colors.
the funny thing is i used to be in tech support, so i dont know if i was just having a
ID10T ERROR, or if it was cause of my nt 4.0 work comp but i got it working now
