I am going to try replacing my valve seals with the head still attached to the block. I found some pics of the head and was wondering if there is any special valve spring compressor that I need before starting this. It appears that the valve springs are recessed and I do not think that the compressor I have will work with the head still attached to the block.

Why don't you just pull the head and get a valve job done?
I need to do something quick. It is starting to smoke every time I get on or off the gas. :punchout: This is just a bandaid until I can disassemble the the replacement engine and port and polish the head, as well as port match the intake and turbo manifold to the head.Quote:

I don't see how that tool works. It seems that once you compress the spring, you can't get to the retainers.......
A valve seal in #4 went totally on the way home Friday. Luckily it was only about a half mile from the house.
FYI the tool mentioned above will not work with the Miata head at all without major modification :roll: . The O2 sensor method mentioned on the :batman: board will not work either unless the outside diameter of the socket is less than 30mm.
One of the things that I learned is that 30mm is the size of the hole that the lifters rest in.
I finally pulled the head, and should have a replacment by Thursday. In the mean time I am going to start "cleaning" up the intake.
