I am replacing my tranny. Everything is done except for one thing.....Can someone tell me how to remove the torque bar? Everything is unbolted, the wiring harness is removed, the two bolts on the differential itself are removed....there is a spacer like thing that WILL NOT come out. What am I missing here?
Why remove the rear differential? You can undo the 4 bolts that hold the propeller shaft (Miata term for "driveshaft") to the rear differential and then it slides out of the rear of the transmission.

Once you remove the two long bolts at the diff, you have to remove the pressed in nut plates at the top. The easiest way is to reinsert the bolts and thread them about 1/2 inch, then give them a good swat with a sledge hammer.
Guess that's what I need to know...the torque bar does not need to be removed to drop the shaft. Damn you Haynes Manual!!!
I removed the two long bolts from the tranny, and one short one from a bracket connected to the tranny. I left the bracket attatched to the transmission. I removed one long bolt from the diff, and loosened the other. This allowed the PPF (torque bar) to hang and rotate out of the way. It also made it easy to realign everything, since one bolt still held it in place.
