Timing belt time?

I figured I'd add a few miles to the car before giving it a weekend of upkeep. Now sitting just under 69k miles, I figure it's about time to put this box of pieces and parts to use.

...and since I've never done this before, I don't even know if I've got everything. I doubt there's a CAS o-ring, for example. Packing slips that can't be understood just stink. :confused:

Anyway, if someone, or several anyones, would love to donate time, space, air tools or expertise (or at least some knowing looks), I'd be more than happy to provide the customary porridge, hot dogs and hookers...

I might be able to help out or even host the TB change. (I'm in McKinney)

If you have a 1.8L I even have special timing belt tools to help out.

One tool locks the cam gears in place which helps when reinstalling the timing belt. I also have a tool the locks the crank when torquing the crank bolt. Finally, I have a nifty seal puller tool for removing those pesky cam and crank oil seals.

I will gladly supervise since I've done about 5 Miata Timing belts and might be conned into turning a wrench or two.

BTW, I typed up the following for a friend. Might be of some use to you too. Prices may have changed some.

My guess is your quote is the bare minimum in parts replacement.
Timing Belt, Spark Plugs, Air Filter and Fluids. For that, their price is about average.

I’d personally pay more to have all the above items replaced. Overkill? Maybe. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Your call, pay now or pay more later.

I am looking at having to do this for the first time in 10K so I would like to come check it out and hand ya tools etc. but thats about as much as I could help.

Depending on the day and part of town, I might swing by to help out & get some brownie points...looks like timing belt #2 will be due for a change before too long, shes passed 120K.

As to your location question, POS, I'm in North Dallas, and looks like black roadster is in north north north Dallas. Love to have your company if possible.
I know I can round up one other interested person who's decent with tools, but he also has no experience in this area.

Those specialized goodies sound handy, black. I've got the venerable 1.6 at present, however. Thanks for the possible offer of space and help! :D

Any more takers? The more the merrier and all that.

BTW, I can travel if need be. We can try my tools on your 1.6L. They may still work. If not, there are other methods to the install w/o the special tools.

Is your 1.6L a short nose or long nose crank?

Uh, the 92 he has is a big nose crank... They stopped the short nose back 1/2 way through 91.

I'm open for either day. Wiiiide open and have no preference outside of the whole "sooner is better" philosophy.
If nothing else, the *other* day can be side striker install day. :D Also need to remove a little rust from the driver door, should anyone want to watch a little Dremel action...and no, that wasn't a short joke.
