Hi, my name is Randy, and I have a problem :oops: .......

These are the cars that I have owned since I was 16 (now 39). Can anyone top this??? (21 vehicles)

Close to order purchased. Interesting notes: 5 green cars, 7 convertables, 7 4x4's, 5 new cars, 6 white cars...

I think this is complete... I am not done yet. There's about 10 motorcycles (I still can't ride that great), a Sea-Doo, half a boat, and a few trailers too.

Let's see... here's what I've had (from 16 to 31):

'82 Saab 900 - day-old crap brown, and broke down more than any other car I've owned. Hated this car, and was glad to be rid of it.

'85 Nissan 200sx - blue, last of the rwd ones. Loved this car.

'85 Volkswagen Quantum GL-5 - gold, inline 5-cylinder. Not a bad car, but all four power window regulators died during the two year I owned it. I hear VW still can't make a good power window 20 years later... :wink:

'85 Mazda 626 Touring Sedan - maroon with maroon interior - gotta love the '80s! Loved the 4-door hatchback sedan concept, along with the motorized oscillating center vents.

'88 Mazda RX7 GXL - gray with maroon leather. Great car, never gave me a lick of trouble. Started my love affair with rotaries.

'95 Honda Civic DX Coupe - gray with gray interior. First new car I ever bought, and was as stripped as they come - it had manual everything (including steering) and no radio when I drove it home. Bought a jet ski after having this car for a year, and got tired of submerging half of it to get the ski in the water, so I traded it on a...

'96 Toyota Tacoma Extended Cab - black, 4x4, V6, all the bells and whistles. I loved this truck, and towed many a Jeep out of the mud with it. Sold it shortly after getting married and selling the jet ski.

'98 Honda Prelude - green, first car I ever autocrossed, and first car I ever tok on the open track. Only automatic I ever owned, and although the Sportshift wasn't bad as automatics go, I still missed having a manual.

'95 Honda Civic LX Sedan - black. My wife bought this car new while we were dating, and when we "inherited" a Camry she passed this along to me to use as a daily driver. Great beater, wish we hadn't traded it in towards her Accord last year, or I'd still be using it as a beater.

'93 Mazda RX7 twin-turbo - Black. Since I had the Civic as a daily driver, I didn't need a reliable track car anymore, and sold the Prelude. I bought this car, and learned the meaning of the word unreliable. I could have leased a Z06 for a year for what I put into this car in repairs over the 9 months I owned it. Great car... when it ran. Scary expensive when it didn't.

'99 Mazda Miata Sport - Green. When I finally wised up and cut my losses on the RX7, I bought this car. It's been a great - and reliable - track/autocross car and has also served me as a daily driver since we sold the Civic.

That's it for me.

I guess I'm a "poor" boy... all I've really owned is:

- 1990 Ford Bronco II (I wish I still had this one)

That's it! Now, I've driven some other cars -- noteably a 1972 AMC Gremlin :shock:, a 1969 MGBGT, and a 1975 MG Midget, 1995 BMW 518i -- but I didn't own any of those.

I guess I just couldn't "keep up with the Jones"! :wink:

How did you like that Dakota Qud Cab? I'm sorta thinking a truck might make a nice 3rd car for the family, and I'm partial to the smaller ones (compact or mid-size). However, it would have to be large enough to haul my Spec Miata around. :wink:

I've always liked the Toyota Tacoma four-door pickup, but I don't think it could handle a car and trailer. The Dakota is a little bigger, and might be able to handle a car trailer...

1964 Opel Cadet - first car and first one I named - "Tan Turd" COULD NOT KILL IT. @ 70 mph I would jerk it into 2nd, dump the clutch and slide around corners with the rear wheels locked like them WRC guys do now without using the hand brake :shock: If it rained or I took it to the car wash, I had to pull the distributor cap and dry it out.
1955 Chevy station wagon - not a Nomad and not a pretty car. V8 & Powerglide. 8 track and big honkin speaker cabinets in the back - great date car - ask anotherthing :oops: When I sold it to my best friend (still) it had Caddy coil springs tied to the rear axle to give it that dragster look that was sooo popular in the mid-60's . . . that and the leaf springs were shot
1957 Opel Record - 3 on the tree and wool seat covers :? Looked like a small 54 Chevy with leprosy. Previous owner lived in Houston and loved to drive it down the beach. Dumbest wreck I ever had was in this one.
1969 Dart Swinger Big Slant 6 & 3 on the tree - came with no radio, no A/C, vinyl seats and rubber floor mats. Just the way I wanted it. Read somewhere that they were hot in SCCA road races. Folks made the down payment for my HS graduation and my uncle worked at the Dodge dealer
1st gen Chevy Van old phone company truck - 3 on the tree and a clutch pedal that was so stiff the steering column was loose - first hippie van
71 Fiat Front engine RWD ragtop - 6 weeks for the first oil filter to come in at the Fiat dealer. 6 weeks of push starting when the starter died (ever tried to push start a car in an ice storm - by yourself?!?) :( Sold it when someone put a ball bearing in the intake and I got a job offer 300 mi from home
74 Datsun B210 One of the most fun and dependable ugly cars ever made. I hauled tons of video equipment down some of Arkansas' worst improved roads. 128k mi and I sold it because I was sick of driving it. Saw it going down the road about 5 years later
1978 Chevy van Only had one seat when I took delivery from the dealership in Booneville Ark. No radio, No A/C, wrong shade of gray :roll: , but the dealer was a friend. By the time the Insurance Company wrote me a check for it, it was 1981 and due to all the time and money I'd put into it, their check almost equalled what I gave for it...3 years before! NEVER mount the spare tire under the middle of the vehicle. Cadillac Tire Carrier of Ft Worth was out of business by the time my spare fell off and caused me to roll the van. AM/FM radio, 8 track and CB, all in a overhead console I built! Platform bed, walls, console, floor and ceiling all covered in carpet - I did it, and it probably made a big difference in the ladies riding in the back not being injured when it rolled!
1974 Toyota PU first second car we had - not bad.
81 Corolla - the car that replaced the Van. Not bad either, except when it hydroplaned across 5 lanes in front of an oncoming lumber truck. anotherthing landed across a 6 foot deep ditch. After the divorce, she said the clutch dumped into the floorboard and she hated it already.
80? Suburban Lease buy-out, and when I sold it, the orig leasor bought it back from me. Barge with a bad tranny - great ham radio ride :)
80ish Chevy Citation 4dr hatchback (see B210)- step son drove it to California and sold it at 250k + miles - still running
79 Ford 3/4 ton 15 passenger van still got it - 460 cid of gas consumption - still spend the night in the back at TMS occassionally, haul anything from garage sale junk to furniture to bedding plants. A/C is on the fritz, but the old blingbling seat cushions from the Miata keep me bum cool
GTI - used well actually TRASHED, but tons of fun til the tranny cratered :cry: Red, sunroof & stickshift.
96 Civic I was thrown out of the first dealership where I tried to buy this car. Very dependable. Red, sunroof & stickshift.
01 Miata LS and the rest is history

Sorry I don't have all the exact years- so many cars, and the paperwork is in another place where I live.
If you don't count the various company barges and numerous POS's my last wife chose to drive, that is about all I can remember.

84 VW GTi. My first tuner car. It was low.
85.5 Porsche 944. Maybe one of the best over all cars ever made up to recent times.
91 Nissan 300zx. One good looking car. No camber adjustments up front.
92 Eagle Talon TSi. Hoot of a street car. Worthless for autocross.
94 Ford Probe GT. Great V6 motor.
95 Miata R. Lease car
93 RX-7 TT. Kick myself for selling that one. I liked it a lot.

Gary S. tows the Track Dog with a crew cab Tacoma Pre-runner. He made it up to Hallett and back at a pretty good clip last fall... too bad the Track Dog didn't fare as well on that trip (electrical gremlins). :?

Seriously though, the V6 Tacomas can be optioned to tow up to 5000 pounds.

Of all the cars I've owned, I would take another one of those trucks in a heartbeat. I miss the Civic because it was a cheap and reliable crapbox (put gas in one end every so often and oil in the other end not quite as often), but the truck was fun. I never got stuck in traffic with it (ever make your own off ramp? :wink: ), people always moved right for me on the freeway (especially since I usually left the lights on the brush gaurd uncovered - flash to pass, indeed), and it was indestructible (I literally - although unintentionally, I promise - mowed over a small tree with that truck offroad once). :D

First Car: 80 Ford Fiesta - NO, not the Festiva.. we're talking about the car made by VW for Ford before they finished building the Escort plants. My friends called it the Timex car... Hit a deer, took out a fence row (made with trees, not normal posts), and got broadsided by a little old lady. Car kept on running.

68 Mustang - Fun car, didn't have the money to fix it up.

78 Ford Fiesta - Why not? They ran like a swiss clock. The only problem was that if you left 'em idling they would overheat and boil in 5 minutes. Even said to not do that in the Owner's Manual.

88 Subaru - Funny... ugly purple color. kept breaking. Kept fixing it. Traded it in on the Mustang... funny thing too.. the next owner didn't have a lick of trouble. I guess I traded it off too soon. I fixed everything!

86 Ford Mustang - 2nd biggest POS I've ever had. Single barrel carb with bolts that went up from under it... they'd come loose constantly and the carb would flop all over the top of the engine like a fish. Caused the car to run real rich & plugged the cat. Busted rings and a seized piston. Junkyard motor time... busted timing belt and valves... and warped head... found plugged cat was the problem in the first place causing everything to heat up. Another junkyard motor & traded it in on ....

90 Toyota Tercel - this is hands down the biggest POS ever. Got screwed by the dealership & extended warranty company and learned (too late) that I could've sued 'em for triple damages. Drank oil like it was going out of style. 1 quart for every 2 tanks of gas! They kept putting me off & putting me off over 9k miles. After crossing 100k they said "your #2 rings & valve guides are shot, would you like to trade it in since it's out of warranty?" Oh well. I got my revenge by telling friends & family what happened and they bought (8!!!) cars elsewhere. Those scumbags knew I was way upside down in that car. Junkyard motor in it... ran decent for another 50k miles till I traded it.

86 Jeep Cherokee - Fun vehicle! My first Jeep. Hoses and a water pump were all it needed. Cracked exhaust manifold and it clattered like hell but it would take a severe beating and ask for more.

89 Cherokee - bought it (traded the POS Toyota in on it)... put lots of miles on it. put a new motor in at 186k and sold it at 220k. Gave it to the wife when I got the....

96 Grand Cherokee - First luxurious vehicle. I loved it! Very reliable. Traded it off for a Kia when we were about to have David.

98 Kia Sephia - WOW... what a lemon. Metal shavings in the oil. Dealership dismissed it. Wiper blade problems & recall. Starter relay recall. Starter died & was replaced. Taillight assembly fell apart. Gas cap recall. Warping rotor problems... rotors replaced twice then they admitted a problem and put a different rotor part # on to fix it. door rattles the dealership could never fix... and the auto tranny died at 36k miles. It was in the shop as much as I drove it. got rid of it for....

97 Grand Cherokee Limited - loaded with everything but heated seats & 4x4. Still have it today... almost 180k on it.

92 Miata Black & Tan - Got my Cisco CCIE certification and this was my present to myself. Did lots of mods to it and it is still a FUN ride. Gave it to my wife after getting the 03.

92 Miata - Mariner Blue - bought it for the wife. Drove it home & found a puddle in the driveway... urg. Waterpump. Didn't drive it much the year we had it. I did a lot of work fixing this car. It drives great now but since the 03 found its way into our driveway this one is on cars.com.

03 Miata - Splash Green Mica - Couldn't pass it up for the price! Already put a different style bar in it, complete with saddle bags and windblocker. Got an oil filter relocation kit to go in it during an upcoming tech day. Just recently picked up some AutoX rims and a racing hemet too ;) I'm hooked.

Those were all the daily drivers... there was also an 81 Escort Wagon and a 78 Fiat X-1/9 too that were project cars. Towed into the driveway and towed out of the driveway. That was WAY back before I had proper tools and knowledge ;) Now I do most of my car work myself. Anything on the outside of the motor is fair game.

1987 VW Jetta, a great first car except for the electrical gremlin that made me charge the battery every three days or so (kept the car for about 9 months total)

1990 Acura Integra, another great car that I completly abused. I had this car for over 2 years in which I drag raced it till the tranny finally blew up and axles started popping. I finally gave it up at 193k miles and got a....

1991 Nissan 240sx, a car I greatly miss. I also drag raced the hell outta this car, I actually started modifying this car myself and learned that I need to learn how to control a car ( I totalled it just over a year after I bought it.)

1997 Mazda Miata, This is the car most of ya'll know, I started to learn driving wasnt all about speed in a straight line. I did almost all the work on this car myself and got into AX and open track. Sold recently to help out with the family ( I'm already missing Blackie)

2002 Mazda Miata, This was the car I got for Olivea, hated having to give this one up too, but We ended up with a....

2003 Mazda Protege5, This is the family hauler, a fun car that is practical that I rarely get to drive.

1986 VW Scirocco, This is my new project since I sold the '97. I'm not sure what I've gotten myself into with this one. I used to curse this car when my dad drove it, but now that its mine I think I might like it. LOL

Worst pos I ever owned. Bought it from my boss, drove it about 8 miles and discovered the heater hose had a leak and the temp gauge did not work. Never smelled a thing til I stopped (too busy trying to get used to the offset steering wheel). It siezed. Took forever to get a new short block - made my new mechanic mad when I called him and said I found one that would be delivered the next day.
Once it was running, my new mechanic was dismissed. My coworker convinced me that we should put an instrument cluster on the car. NEVER USE PLASTIC LINE TO A MECHANICAL OIL PRESSURE GAUGE. Sold that puppy as soon as I put on a metal line and washed off all the baked on oil.
Same coworker had a neighbor who had a Courier PU (still said Mazda under every door, bin, and hood you could open) that needed rebuilding. "Most of the engine's in the bed." Got it cheap. Said coworker's neighbor was a mechanic who was working out of his house. Old Al put it back together and painted it for me. Head was cracked, but he got another. "Maybe a little more compression, but she'll run fine." Old Al reassured me. The torque was phenominal from that little 4 banger. I torqued those headbolts everynight, and everyday the head gasket would puke again. Best thing about that experience - Old Al painted it in his front yard one night after the dew settled - the color gray the 78 van was supposed to be. Dark (almost black) metal flake gray. Not a single flaw in the paint - SUWHEEET! First set of aftermarket wheels I ever bought were for that old truck - white spokes like on my AX trailer :shock: Sold it to a kid who totalled it before the head gasket could blow again.

I've thought of doing this before, but have never sat down to write about all the cars I've owned. This was fun both times, and I'm glad I did it before all those wrinkles on my brain leaked out to my face and I couldn't remember at all . . . :pl:

I couldn't kill mine! My 78 had rusted through the coolant pipe that ran the length of the engine... lost all my coolant one day driving down the highway.

Started losing power, engine started clattering (pinging) like mad, noticed smoke from all the oil on the outside of the engine getting super hot... saw the temp gauge pegged to the right, pulled over & shut it down.

Got towed home. Bought a pipe at the salvage yard, put it on, and filled her with coolant. Fired right up and ran like a champ.

Nothin' like a cast iron block, cast iron head, and an engine wth a timing chain instead of a belt :D

My first experience with Defensive Driving was in my 80 Fiesta. In Indiana if you are under 18 and you get 2 tickets within 6 months of each other you have to take it. Mine were for "unsafe starts" meaning I smoked the tires at a stop light. Really smoked 'em too! 40mph red-lined in 2nd gear with barely moving through the intersection and smoke rolling off the tires!

Cop laughed so hard while giving me the ticket that he had tears in his eyes. He had no idea the car could do that :lol: And of course, I didn't see him in his hiding place. DOH!

My brother won't ever race me again on the highway to a destination. I was in my 78 and he was in the 80 and I passed a string of cars. He decided to pass too... I ducked in front and all he saw was CAR COMING! He made it inbetween some cars but not before getting his first few gray hairs at 18 - HAHAHAHAHA He had to burn his underwear!

I guess he never thought to look ahead of the car in front of him! (which was me!) And that he really shouldn't have been passing if he couldn't see what was ahead of him.

Those cars bring back some great memories. Like, did you know you can fit my mom, my large aunt, me squeezed between the seats, and 8 bushels of tomatoes in a Ford Fiesta? Mom used to do a lot of canning and freezing foods when I was a kid.

Being sqeezed in wasn't fun at the time but I can laugh about it now!

Was reminscing with anotherthing and remembered the Honda CRV I had before the Miata.

Living outside Caddo Mills down a mile of gravel road and then half mile of hard clay or really slick muck - depending on the rainfall. It performed famously until the port for the shifter cable in the tranny became caked with hard clay and would no longer work. NEVER TAKE A CAR TO RUSTY WALLIS HONDA. The warranty issue became an insurance claim by the time it was hauled on a roll-back! Ruined rr rim, bent rf lower control arm, and they claimed it came in that way. I had no way of proving otherwise, and my agent finally said, "That's why you have insurance. Let it go. You'll never prove they did it." Hondas are great cars - wish I could afford the tires for an S2K :silent: DOH - did I say that out loud?

I remember your red RX-7... that was one very sweet looking piece of art. I think that car ranks as one of the sexiest, most sinuous cars ever built -- up there with those old Ferrari's -- and your's was in amazing condition. I was surprised when you sold it 'cuz you were so fast with it!

And I also really liked your Vivid Yellow Miata. I know it didn't meet expectations as an autocross car, but I would have liked to have it as a daily driver / wine-n-cheezer. I probably couldn't have afforded your asking price :wink: , but I would have given it a shot.

Corvette... well, I guess that was back to your high horsepower roots. Funny how the nimbleness of the Miata spoiled you. :lol:

And then you just had to come back and play with us (in CS)! :shock: Catch it if you can indeed. Most of us can't! :oops: :wink:

I actually loved that truck and was sorry to see it go... I was seriously afraid of getting laid off and put a for sale sign on it, and it sodl pretty quick to a guy who's kid just totaled his.

It handled well, hauled a more than adequate amount of stuff, pulled my Rx7 back from Little rock on a flatbed with no problem, pulled a 21' skiboat with no issues either.. I originally wanted a Durango, but getting the truck was cheaper, and it turned out to be teh better choice. And tehre's an advantage to a truck made by the mini-van company.. spots for *everything*

The only complaint I had was the gas mileage.. with teh 4x4 4.7 I only got about 17mpg... but I do have a heavy foot.. And by the way, they're not slow.. Easily faster then my rx7s, and faster than most miata's as well.
