I rearended a VW Jetta this morning. Took off from a light, everyone slowed for someone turning left. I didn't slow in time. :( Not much damage to either car, but I feel stupid. At least I was in the Civic and it wasn't perfect to begin with.
Let insurance pay for it, or pay for his car myself. That is the question.
I'm leaning toward insurance.....

Glad to hear you're OK with nothing else bruised. If it's anything more than simple cosmetics on the bumper of the VW, you're probably far better off to let insurance take over. My first guess at the cost of repairs on mine was about half the insurance adjusters write-up, and 40% of what it actually cost. Parts for those German beasts are pricey.
Fortunately, no fenders were bent. Just some paint and rubber scrapes. My hood looks a little popped up, but it's my beater car, so I'm just thankful it wasn't the miata and we weren't going fast. I think he'll just need a bumper cover and paint. Of course ABS in the miata may have saved the whole thing. :(
I'd vote for insurance... you just don't know where this will go from here. It isn't always cheap to fix a "slight" hit on the rear end. Those 5 MPH bumpers can cost $$ to fix. Also, if the VW driver starts to feel neck pain later it could get messy.Quote:

I would tend to agree... it often frustrates me when I hear of people NOT turning things into insurance when they pay good money for the insurance. If you are not going to use the insurance, why not just get liability coverage only? You also need to consider medical issues... You don't want to deal with a late filing with insurance when the guy's friends convince him that his neck hurts a month from now.Quote:

As for my car, I do have just liability on this car only. It wasn't pretty to begin with in the front. Now I have an excuse for a ricey bumper and grill. ;) NOT!

I agree that insurance is the best option. You'd be amazed at how much it can cost to fix a modern car, even if that car only gets "mildly bumped" at 5mph! :shock:

Ya, glad you're okay and were not in the Miata. When I got my ego bruised earlier this year, I had an 8mph collision and it did $2400 in damage to my car according to the estimate if I was to use my insurance!:shock: Luckily I had a friend at the shop and got an entire front clip from Mazda Haven and he did the labor minus paint for $500. I know the Miata's a uni-body but I thought it could take a hit better than that.:(Quote:
