Question for the techies

I’ve got a question for you computer types. I’ve got two computers sitting at home, and I’d like to transfer some files – including thousands of photos I’ve collected over the years – from one hard drive to the other. Is there some quick and easy (and inexpensive) way to connect the hard drives and directly transfer the files without having to first store them on some other media?

Fastest, happiest way is to go buy a ~$20 or less USB hard drive enclosure from Fry's. Or borrow one, etc.

If they both have ethernet, you can have them talk to each other, but that's neither fast nor happy if you haven't already done it.

Just make sure you use a DoD approved algorithm to wipe the drive if any of those photos are sensitive in nature - you don't want 3Bean's photoshop skills to come into contact with those. ;)

Ethernet is an easy way to do it and once you get comfortable with sharing data you can also easily share printers.

I bought an external USB attached hard drive a few months back (300GB for ~$150). You can back up to it from the old machine and then restore to the new. When you're done you can use the new drive to do scheduled unattended backups. ::2Cents::

or install one of the hard drives in the other machine and copy that way.

Do you have Highspeed internet? Would you like to share it with both computers, as well as share the files and photos? Buy yourself a couple of Wireless NIC's (network cards) and a wireless router (if you don't already have one) If you have DSL by SBC, then you will probably already have one. Then network the router and the two computers together, share your folder that has your info on it and copy them to the other computer.

$120 for parts (if you allready have a wireless router) and some guidance here and wola, internet on both pc's you can share your printers, as well as files. Then you can also setup a cross network backup to automaticly backup your important files to the other computer, safegarding them from h/d failure.

I've got FIOS and a wireless network at the new house. All of my computers are on this network, but I haven't got a clue how to share data from one to the other over the network. Can you walk a computer neophyte through the process?

What operating system do you have on each computer? That will determine how to set up user accounts and file system permissions...

Or... for some pizza & drinks we could have a "configure Altiain's home network" party and do it for you.

or for us Mechanical types... it's actually easy to open up the box from one computer, plug the hard drive into the 2nd computer and just ransfer all teh data that way.. Takes one setting change in the Bios to tell it to look for teh drive and viola! you have ilke a f:/ drive on yoru computer!

I think I go with the "pizza and beer and set up Iain's network" idea. :wink:

I have Millenium on two of the computers (I know, I know...) and XP on the new one.

If you have Millenium on two of the computers, I strongly suggest burning them. In a fire. A hot fire.

I think you guys have lost track of the original intent. I don't want to network. I don't want to take over the world. I just wanna transfer the thousand+ racing photos that made up the screensaver on my old PC to the new one without spending the entire day burning CDs.

I think I'm gonna crawl back in my cave now... :?
