Cool pic

I just got a picture from one of our customers that I thought was kind of cool, so I decided I’d share it. The machine in the picture is an Atlas Copco DML, powered by a 19 liter Cummins turbo-diesel. This is one of the prototypes that I’ve been working on the past eighteen months, drilling for gold at Round Mountain Mine in Nevada.

I wish. :rolleyes: Interesting little factiod: at this particular mine it takes anywhere from 30 to 40 tons of ore to produce one ounce of gold. :shock:

This is one of the smaller engines I've worked with on this project (:wink:). The Cummins QSK19 is good for 800hp @ 2100rpm, and 2275 lb-ft of torque at 1500rpm. You oughta see what the 50 liter engines can do. :mrgreen:

I just wonder how soon until we see that engine in the Dodge Mega Cab Frisco, TX Edition truck. The suburbanites need that to tow their scouting trailers. :rolleyes:

30-40 tons or "earth" ore, for an oz. of gold???? Do the numbers really add up? Equipment, preservation, labor,??? I guess they do. I'm amazed.

Well, they're probably taking all sorts of other minerals and such as by-products of the digging, and that's where the profit comes in. But I bet their margin is thin...

Actually, you'd be suprised. As far as I know, this mine produces gold, and only gold. I don't think their ore is subjected to any secondary processes to leach out other minerals.

That being said, their margins right now are a long way from thin. According to the mine manager, they start to contemplate mothballing equipment if the price falls below $300/ounce. With gold currently trading above $600/ounce, they're desperate to get as much out of the ground in as short a time as their leases will allow.
