My niece is in the market for a cheap laptop for email and such. Wireless woudl be a big plus. No games, no video editting, etc.
I'm looking for something she can afford, and I need some input on specs and sources.
TIA ;)

go with Dell, they always have great deals on laptops. Check back there often because they change them all the time. she should be able to get one from them for around 400-500 for just a basic plain jane laptop. They also have GREAT tech support. Ihave used dell for a long time now and have always been happy with their products.
5 of my 6 computers are a dell. Sometime pawn shops have them on the cheap.
If you want a used one, http://www.sidewalksale.com is this weekend.
If you go there say hi. I'm always set up there.

I know a couple of people happy WITH THESE... but I haven't used them myself...
That's right today is First Saturday
I do have some computer stuff I need to get rid of
I've always been happy with my Compaq laptops. There V6000 line is under $500 after rebates.
I have a space... well 2 actually... bring the stuff by and gimme a little to cover part of the spaces and you can sell yer stuff. Save you some cash, plus I have 4 tables.
I won't be leaving the house until about 5:30am for the sale. It starts at about 10pm tonight and goes through 12 noon.

I got the V5000 as a graduation laptop, loving it as well for 7-8 months. My mom's old Compaq Presario laptop lasted several years, sold on laptop for about $700 1 year ago. My dad just got the "nicer" package of my V5000 as well since he saw how happy I was with mine (upgraded mem, HDD, and CPU). So all in all just great experiences.
Watch Compusa, I got a pretty quick little compaq for 4 or 500. Wifi enabled. light weight. (presario V2000)
Actually watch all the stores b/c a few yrs back I bought a Toshiba for 500 bucks (day after thanksgiving sale) at Best Buy.
Best Buy had a toshiba adxertised, last year about this time, on the front page for $399.
The only problem I had with it was that the battery was only good for about an hour tops.
I traded it in for a Averatec at twice the price.

Clever people figure out how to stack multiple discounts, rebates and promotions and get really good deals. I have seen nice Dell laptops in the 500-600 range.
