I was changing the oil and doing a few other things on the RX-8 this afternoon. I pulled the drain plug, replaced the filter, then went off to do something else while I was waiting for the pan to drain completely.

I came back and started to fill the car with fresh oil... and I managed to pour about a 1/2 gallon in before I remembered I hadn't put the drain plug back in. :punchout:

Thankfully I had enough extra oil on hand to fill the car after I put the plug back in.

Anyway, have a laugh on me today. I did. :mrgreen:

Hmm, maybe that explains why all of the RX-8 owners keep having to add more oil. ::BaHump::

At least you didn't start the car like I did.::BaHump:: A few second of run time didn't seem to hurt the tough old Escort.

Sounds like the time over at POS's old place where I was almost done with the transmission change only to find the crush washer sitting on the drain pan.

The sad things is this will only slightly increase your oil consumption over normal driving.

First thing I did when I got my Miata back in December was to change the oil. I drained the pan and carefully measured out 3.6 quarts. Somewhere during the awkward oil filter removal and the subsequent mess it makes on the engine shield below, I got out of my usual routine.
So while I'm happily adding my 3.6 quarts I happen to notice a spreading oil slick creeping down my driveway (my driveway is on a slope, so it spreads better).

Rushing around looking for kitty litter, I can't find wherever it is my wife has it stored away. So I grab the cat box and dump the whole thing on my spreading oil slick, cat turds and all.

Now I've got my very own bag of cat litter in the garage.

Reminds me of the first time I did an oil change on my truck... I bought one of the oil pan/container things that said it could hold 15 quarts of oil, not realizing that the hole in to the pan was the size of a #2 pencil while the drain hole in the truck was about 3/4" diameter. Needless to say, all the dirty oil didn't get in to the container and most of it wound up on my driveway. I couldn't get out from under the truck quick enough to get a bucket. I had to build some dams out of kitty litter to contain my mini Exxon Valdez. 11 quarts of oil is a lot to get soaked up and disposed of.

So where did Todd put his keys?

Thanks for sharing that, now I dont feel so bad about some of the things I have done.
I will bet though that you never do that again, those kind of mistakes seem to linger in your mind for the rest of your life.....so really you have got it out of your way now and don't have to worry about making that mistake again.

Yes, mistakes made by HAZMAT are much easier to get over than filing medical forms over something silly.
