FI electronics

I don't know how to put together a harness, now that i got to it
its a bit more detail than i thought.

I'm connecting this wires to a DB37 to plug it into my EMS. I have the
male connection with all the pins ready for the inside of the DB37 and i have a plastic casing for it, when i put each wire to each pin, do i crimp it together or should i solder it? I think crimps would be less messy, but i'm still thinking this might be a load of work for me...

any inputs?

Crimp... if there's any vibration the soldered wires will break.

how do you actually crimp them in that tight space? a special tool?
I should be getting this wires sometime next week... can i just go to
radio shack and buy crimps or is there a better place for that?

They make small crimpers or you can do it with a good pair of small needle nose pliers. You should be able to get at the pins from the side of the connector.

Oh and plenty of time and patience.

ok, would 18" of wire suffice for the EMS?

I was thinking of installing the EMS behind the passenger seat for closer
access to the DB9 connector but i'll probably install the EMS under the
glovebox and run a DB9 connection all the way to the back of the centerconsole...

Hey RJ, you know where the LED's go, well if i put the EMS under the glove area, then i won't see the lights, can i run wires and mount them elsewhere or would that reduce the power to the lights? I'm thinking about 3ft. of wire...

3ft won't hurt a thing... the current is already limited by resistors to around 10ma... the resistance in 3' of wire won't make an appreciable difference in the current.

After the initial install, I have never looked at the lights on my MS. Its hidden up behind the dash/glovebox. You get way more information from the serial interface and that cable can be run anywhere.

Mine haven't yet and it arguably sees much more severe use then what the miata will see.

I have had cable issues twice on my MS.

First was the harness connecting the relay board to the ECU came loose. (my fault as I forgot to tighten the screw on the DB25)

Second was one of the injector power wires pulled out of its crimped connection and the Jeep does not run well on 1/2 fuel.

I have never had any issues at all with any of my soldered connections. Its all in how the joint is made.

how friendly is that interface? I really want to use the laptop but the one i got doesn't seem that reliable and that interface could be mounted just about anywhere. Can you really tune with that thing, or monitor levels?

Hudson, how long did it take you to wire in your MS to your Jeep?

I thought the solder would be best solution, that's how they put Harleys together, and those things shake enough to knock your fillings out of your mouth. But most of my connections are crimped so I am no help.

Yes you really tune the whole system through the serial interface. The free software you donwload has the ability to tune very single parameter in the system. You can even use teh logging capability to logg all of your system parameters while you are driving to help you dial the ECU in.

I custom wired my Jeep during its rebuild. So I can not give you an exact time frame. I did build my own wiring harness wire by wire.

Maybe so, but the only approved method in aircraft is by crimping. As RJ said, soldering will cause a weak spot in the cable. Mainly this is due tot he wicking action of the solder going up the wire from the pins while soldering.

Should you decide to solder the connections, the less wicking the better.

onto the next step instead of getting stuck on the harness...

Have you tested the ECU yet? I have the test equipment if you want to make sure its working correctly. I can also plug in my notebook and you can see how the software works on a running system.

Hawk: yeah i bought the stimulator, you plug it into the db37 and move the knobs to simulate engine signals... i loaded up the software but they just came out with a new version on the 14th of this month.

...and my laptop is acting up, the monitor doesn't come up so i'm not sure if the monitor doesn't work or if the motherboard is fried, i checked all the connections inside and they're all clean...
I wouldn't mind some help though, like reloading the latest version, MSII extra! hopefully i'll be the first
miata running it...
