To Heal-Toe, or to Left-Foot-Brake that is the question

Hey guys im still kinda new at this place but i was wondering if there was anyone out there that drift or ride the curcuit courses

I guess im just trying to see who runs on what course, on what setup and what type of driving technique they use because since i was like 12 ive been reading a lot of technical stuff and trying it out but now i wanna learn fronm more exp. drivers

it's all about left foot braking and heal toeing the cluck with your left foot braking and clutching =P

i find in a miata a .3 sec heal toe gas peddle tap works well and most of the time just down shifting is all you need sense the car handles like glue most of the time. the only real reason to use the brakes is because your at red line and down shifting will put you at 8500rpms (atlest in my 6 speed) and thats not good. as for that left foot braking stuff only works for autos and sport shifters i would think.

I prefer heel toe shifting. That's all I'm going to say, my mind is still trying to catch up with the above statement ;)

Why would you want to downshift if you're at redline anyway??????? If you're coming into a corner that requires down-shifting, it also requires braking. The reason for heal-n-toe is to match the engine revs to keep the rear end from braking loose when you release the clutch. Left foot braking is used to keep power on while braking, eliminating the delay of getting back on the power. Also used for trail braking.

Caveate to the above explanation is for racing, NOT for drifting..........

Depends on corner you are entering and section following. Most of the time w/ Miatas, left foot brake may be all that is needed. There is no true answer as many variables come into play. Heel toe is always recommended when having to make a shift, this gets revs up to match actual speeds. The point to remember is that keeping all movements smooth, and not unsettling the car. Left foot brake is good for settling the car into a turn, but more for heavier, high horsepower cars. Miatas can rotate easily, so turn in comes easy. Really, just practice. You'll find what suits you best. I tend to heel toe more than left foot brake.

the only time i had to use my brakes coming into turn 5 at hallett cw was if there was a car in front of me that was breaking. in that turn i was able to down shift (from mid 3ed gear) letting off some then powering through into the down hill and it was picking me up a full sec over all a lap and was in high 4th before the next braking point where i was only in mid 3ed the lap before.

Wow!!! You've got a seriously calibrated right foot. I prefer a .5 sec pedal tap. :confused:

BTW, left foot braking has nothing to do with auto vs. manual cars. I'm thinking you're missing the concept.

lol i just make the car fart and then down shift, .3 sec feels about right but i have no concept of time. and i haven't found a reason to left foot brake my miata, the only car i have done that on had sport shifters and my old rabbit

It really sounds like you need to go to a drifting school. Talking about it on the internet doesn't make you feel what's going on down @ the wheels.

These techniques are all valid and great to know. The important parts to consider are things like driving preference, car handling and power, type of corner, entry and exit speed. This way you can aply the different techinques depending on the situation. Remeber that what works best for one person is not always the best for someone else. Go to some drift events and practice. Intercrew hosts them every once in a while.
