Radiator Fan Not Working need help!

Let me first say I have a 1999 Miata with a Hydra ECU. (I'm not sure how relevant that is at the moment.)
At first my radiator fan was working on and off. If I pushed on the connector where the fan is it would cut on and stay on for a little while but if bumped it would disconnect and not work anymore. Come to find out the pin on the fan motor was pushed down into the fan (Stock Fan).
So what I did was I got some Epoxy and poured it down into the fan to set the pin upright where I could plug it in and have a good connection. It worked at first; but later that day it just died all together (a small loss considering the other option was to replace the fan).
Since then, today. I read up on what to do to test the fan and the relays ect. Well I have another another 2000 Miata so I started swapping parts to see if I could find the part that wasn't working.
Well, I swapped out all of the fuses, the fan, and the fan relay switch. All of my parts tested out OK on the 2000; but still the 1999 miata still doesn't work. (just on a side note: the A/C condenser fan does come on when the car reaches a certain tempature, with the A/C off)
Well I got lazy and decided not play with the thermo switch, since I'm a little unsure if what I thought it was is the right part. The part that I was looking at has a 3 prong connector and is wired into what looks like a canister under the glove box area. I know thats what it says it is in the book. However, the wiring diagrams don't even show that that is even used anymore.
Well, I'm not really sure what else to check up on other than the ECU wiring itself. Does anyone else have any ideas?

I do find it interesting that the 2nd fan comes on at temp., but I won't even claim to know much about the NB.

Just offhand, have you put a meter to the wires on the main fan to see if sees any notable current at a temp when you'd expect it to come on? If all of the individual parts check out okay, I then have to wonder about the wiring. Shot in the dark, but it might be worth checking. Might be a loose wire/pinout at the origin for the fan request signal.

Would it be relevant to ask if the Hydra is running as a full standalone or in parallel to the stock computer? Again, I hate to show ignorance (of which I have an abundance!), but I don't know if this is possible like with the Megasquirt.

Rather crappy time of year to have this kinda problem. Best wishes to ya'!

The hydra is a full stand alone and does not have any use for the stock ECU at all.

I also believe that it could be a loose wire.

I haven't had a chance to check the voltage coming or going from the Fan Relay. That is one thing that I have on the agenda to check I just haven't gotten around to it.

BTW: the car doesn't even get hot if I don't run the A/C the only issue is I want to run the A/C because its so freak'n hot!! :MonkBurn:


I did kill my fan so I will have to replace it. I don't want to go with the stock fan again, I'd like to have something that is a little better. But I'm not spending $250 for one of those fans that FM sells.

Sounds like you need to get out the multimeter and start working your way up the line. Having the second car on hand will be nice, as you can check what the reading is on a good car vs the bad car.

Turns out there wasn't problem at all. I feel like that guy from planet of the apes. I was there all along.....

Anyway, I had my two fans swapped in the software. I thought PWM13 was my secondary when it was the Primary the Secondary was on PWM9

BTW: My fan was still bad. So when I went to my buddy Josh's house he had a spare fan from a Civic that I retro fitted until I can get a new one. He said, "Maybe I should have just bought a honda" :rolleyes:

For future reference and for others with a dead fan: when mine died, I got a replacement from www.bsrproducts.com . It's a race supply shop in NC. I don't recall exactly but I think I got this one http://www.bsrproducts.com/product_i...oducts_id=2454 . There are several sizes and CFMs to choose from. Not dirt cheap but way cheaper than OEM or SPAL.

Thanks for the link. What did you need to do to get it to bolt up to the Miata radiator?

I did a bit of Aggie engineering, IIRC. The mounting holes on the fan were *close* to the mounting tabs on the radiator (FM radiator) so I think I got two holes to line up properly and then used some metal strap I had laying around to bridge the gap on the other two. This is from memory from a few years back. Regardless, BSR has several sizes so pick one you like and the mounting fabrication is pretty simple. I also just salvaged the OEM connector and spliced it in to replace the connector on the new fan.
