After reading anything & everything I could find on my symptoms, I think I found (and fixed my problem)...
I somehow picked-up a master-boot-record virus. I found a program called RootRepeal and it cleaned it off. So far, so good! ::Banana::
PS
It appears users using Chrome as a browser are the most likely targets. Search for 'MBR Rootkit' if you're interested in the gory details.
ehh... not seeing how chrome = rootkit target... Maybe my google-fu is weak today, but I wasn't able to find anything.
I'm not implying that you're lying... but please bring proof before saying that google chrome users are being targeted for a rootkit. Most rootkits are aimed at people surfing pr0n, warez and that sort of stuff in unsecure browsers like IE.

One of the threads I found....it seems most reporting the problem were running Chrome.
