There was a time when Long blocks could be had for $1500 from MMS, but those days are long gone. Currently, all Miata engines List for $4135.40 and are $3100 through the Mazda Motor Sports program.

Here are the part numbers:

1.6 90-93: B61P-02-300

Thanks for the info JBH. I appreciate it. The shortblock price is reasonable. But that price with paying for head rebuild, and the gasket set, is real close to the quote I got from Day Custom Engine in Richardson. I understand new versus rebuilt...and I hate the thought of driving so dang far (I hope my old 10mpg truck will make it there and back twice), but they are looking like my best option at this point. Their reputation is rock solid from what I can tell...and they are willing to ASSEMBLE the long block for me at a reasonable price. They appear to have the experience to do it right.

I just can't lie about what I use my Miata for to get in the Mazda Motorsports program.

Again, thanks to everyone for your input. This forum is great.

Hmmm... Didn't get the email. Eddie is indeed the guy to talk to. They refreshed my '99 head a couple of years ago and did all the machine on work on a Ford V8 currently sitting in my RX-7. They've also done plenty of machine work for another friend. Granted, I haven't needed them since I had the head done, but I'm pretty sure they still work with an assembly guy - not in-house, though.

They do always seem to have a lot of work in the shop, so they're not the best at calling you back, but they had my head ready in a week.

Well either it did or it didn't. There is no hiding machine shop issues if you know what you are looking at. They can make mistakes, but so can everybody else. Wrong bore size? Wrong wall finish? Didn't clean the bore properly after machining?

I have been curious abuot signing up and read your post. I looked on the MMS website and it talked about building the car in anticipation of racing. It said something about needing a racing club memebership card. Where would someone go to get that?

Sign up with NASA/BMWCCA/SCCA, etc.

I spent my first year with mazdaspeed while the car was being built out and I started running HPDE's. A couple of autocross results with bmwcca were acceptable competition results to cover the year.

Identifying issues and getting a shop to make good on them are two different things. I probably should not have written this considering it was over 10-years ago.

Its worth a look. I know they do very good work and will stand by it. Not that Ive ever heard of them having to.
Ive seen, heard and rode in several 4,6,8 cylinder engines come out of their shop, all of which have been driven hard and never had a problem.
They built a friends GSR last year. He spins it to about 8500+ every chance he gets.

I understood they were one of those high-volume lo-cost rebuilders using very cheap parts. Is that not the case???

It's a moot point for this go round. I have verbally committed to Day Custom Engine for my rebuild. But thanks for the update...they sure would have been closer! ;-)
